I picked up a slightly used trolling motor from SpurHunter this afternoon and decided to test it out below the dam. There was one turbine running when I arrived, so I tried throwing tubes around the breastworks for some crappie or whites, with only a couple spots, a nice drum and a 6-7 lb channel cat to show for it. They started running two turbines and the current picked up nicely, so I shifted to the main flow, tossing a big swimbait in the boils and seams for a while just in case any stripers felt unusually stupid (nope, but I picked up a hoss spot on it!). Shifted to grubs, hoping to pick up a couple smallies and did, but all relatively small, topping out at about 15". Just as I was getting cold enough to call it a day, got a monster drum, I'd estimate somewhere in the low 20s. Was really hoping it was a big smallie when it hit! Motor worked great, was able to hold position against the flow. Orders of magnitude nicer than my old hunk of junk. Thanks Erik!
