Welcome to BFT joe-b, I would start by buying some 15-20lb line instead of the 40. Bigger isn't always better. It's always good to look and see what other folks are useing for that day. Stop in a bait shop as well and ask questions. They are happy to help. The few times I fished down south, shrimp seemed to be the bait of choice for alot of fish. Start there and good luck.

You just reminded me of when i was your age that was a looong time ago. I would use 20 lb no less than that especially if you are fishing from a pier second for spanish macks i used live bait under a bobber it worked great for me back then in florida. I would buy a bait bucket and a sabiki rig and catch my own bait under the pier and keep it alive in the bucket.I tied a rope to the bucket and put it in the water to keep the bait alive. Also i used wire spanish macks have sharp teeth hope this helps you out.

If you can afford it or get your parents to buy you one, get a small cast net (5' diamater will do to learn with) and when you get to the pier wade out about knee deep and cast the net. Keep any finger sized mullet or other bait fish you net and put in a bucket.
Hook them through the bottom lip up through a nostril. Start catching the fish!
