I fished for carp two days last week and after the results plan to do so again this week! What an awesome week for them. They were actually really hard to find but once we did it was game on. I even caught my biggest carp on the fly to date.
Here is a picture. All fish were on a seven weight and fairly small flies.

Nice PIC! That thing has to be 20lb+[cool]! Where were you at? American Falls is the only other place I've fished for these besides Blackfoot and since you can't get onto Blackfoot yet......
thanks,

I won't say exact weight because I don't want to hear if people think otherwise. But, I'm 6'5 so it kinda distorts the fish. I can say it was way over 20 though!

Are you fishing in Utah or are they starting to get active in Idaho?

They are all fun! I couldn't believe that fish when I saw it. I'm still planning on heading down this next weekend if you still wanna chase carp down there.

I am fishing Idaho. It was really tough fishing though, the carp were really sluggish, that is, until you hooked them!

WOW, thats a good sized fish! I want to catch one. Every time I go fishing I see these darn suckers but I have no clue as to how to catch one. They are ugly as sin but I am not opposed to catching a big fish! What type of fly are you using?
I don't mean to hijack this tread but since it was about carp already.... I was wondering if some of you carp slayers out there might speak up about your techniques.
So how do you carp slayers out there catch them?

When I catch carp at Gem Lake I'm usually slow retrieving a 1/4 oz Panther Martin and end up snagging them by chance to be honest. I have also done this just jigging with a Mr. Twister grub. I did get one to actually hit on a black Mr. Twister grub last year, but that's the only one so far.

a dragon fly nymph or crayfish imitation retrieved fairly fast on a floating line. Fish in 3-4ft of water. Good luck!

You want to be able to sight cast them. So, once you find a carp, the best flies to use depend on the water you fish. A lot of people think Carp are dumb, but thats no the case. The best flies to use are imitations of bugs that are in the water your fishing. Of course, there are generic patterns like buggers and haresears and other generic nymphs. But, getting as close to the available food source as you can will work best. I like starting with generic patters. If the carp wont hit that I will start fishing smaller or patterns that more closely relate to the food source.
When you start casting to Carp try and put the fly 2-3 feet ahead of the fish. A lot of times I have had fish hit with no retrieve at all. If they won't hit it like that slowly strip the fly when you think the Carp can see it. If your using the right fly you should get bit. There are times when they want it faster but it seems like most of the time for me a slow to moderate stripping speed works best.
Look for the Carp in shallow water that you can tell are feeding. Its pretty hard fishing for them in open water.
Have FUN!!!!!!! If you have any other questions pm me.
