Live bait Lake Mead Saturday
#1
Saturday, 05/16/09- Hit the water at 5:30 am. Hoping to net some shad for some live bait fishing.

Bingo! The back coves near Las Vegas Wash were loaded with bait. First toss is successful.

Another net of nice shad!

This net filled one of the bait tanks!
Headed to a point off of Cresent Island and anchored over fish.

View of Hole 33 from anchor.

View of Gov't Wash across the channel from anchor.

Started pulling in small stripers as fast as I could bait.

Two guide boats join the party. These two guys seemed to do everything they could to accomodate their clients.

Ended up with an ice chest full of small stripers. Fish tacos tonight! Off the water before 11:00 am. What a great day on the water.

P.S. Boulder Harbor ramp is a little rough but suitable for most boats. 4WD unnecessary.

Nice report and pictures. Wish I could use live bait, not allowed in Utah even if the water has baitfish. Go figure that one.

Great report, enjoyed the pics! Glad to see the bait showing up. Nice cooler full of fish.....love those fish tacos! <G> We went out on Sunday.....Echo Bay.....put the boat in, the battery for the motor was dead. Could not get it to jump, so we trolled out just on the other side of the tires. Holy cow, caught more fish than any other trip out this year. It was pretty amazing.....and didn't even use the motor! Another fun trip to Lake Mead.

I don't get it. Lake Powell has millions of skinny stripers in it and no live bait allowed. You are allowed to net shad but can't fish with them unless they are dead.....or something like that. What the heck?

You know, the thing I really like about Lake Mead are the rules. No limit on stripers under 20", twenty limit on stripers over 20". Any live bait that is caught in Mead, shad or crawdads can be used. You can even use Wal-Mart goldfish. Any cut-bait is legal. Chumming is legal. The whole goal is remove as many stripers as possible. Sorry, I'm rambling. Anyway, I'm with you, why would the State of Utah ban live bait on waters like Powell?
