I fished East again today, lots of small bass, over 40 with the biggest at 15"...
The rain was not to bad with lighting and all, I got a late start flat tire on the boat trailer, got on the water by 12:00 ...
Water was nice no wind yet but the clouds was building
and the winds would come and go...
Left the lake by 5:00 lot of rain at the ramp but very little at the south end...

I was up there today also, and you did much better then me. I never really got on a pattern. I lost a few at the boat, stuck a few that were on beds. But never landed any. I fished deep, shallow and even broke out the drop shot. There was one guy in a bass boat, (you apparently). I almost came over to say hi and see how you were doing. But decided against it. Wish I would have. I have been doing well up there this year tell today. I did talk to couple trout fishermen that got two BIG SM on power bait. GO figure.... Can I ask you about the pattern you were on? If you would rather not ,I understand.

Too many meat fisherman go up there and keep the bass... So I don't tell any one what I use till I know they will C&R the bass up there....
The size of the bass up there is , in the early days of east canyon you could get a few in the 4 to 5 lb class of bass but now you are lucky to get them at two or three pounds...

The smallmouth bass in East Canyon are susceptible to any soft plastic that has similar colors to the crawfish in the lake. Orange or red 2-3 inch work really well. I was up there last Friday evening and the fishing was great. I would like to remind everyone that the smallmouth bass were illegally introduced along with the black crappie. These types of illegal fish movements really create havoc for the biologist who are attempting to manage these fisheries. The DWR is attempting to let folks know by these liberal limits on the waters that these "bucketed" fish show up in that they will not be managed. There are also disease and invasive species issues that we need to be concerned with as well. Please help the DWR out if you see anyone moving live fish from a water and call the poaching hotline or the police. We really have a lot to lose by these activities.

[cool][#0000ff]Whatever happened to the mandatory keep and kill rule for illegally introduced species. Grantsville has it for smallmouth and now Blue Lake has it for Tilapia. But, I wonder what kind of mess it would create to go back and slap it on all of the other illegal introductions...like the perch in some waters...now that they are a major part of the fishery.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Ditto for the smallies and crappies in EC. I can hear the wailing from the bassaholics if DWR were to declare open season on them. Cliff would jump off his tackle box.[/#0000ff]

I don't know why it's so political to eat bass anyways? They taste pretty good. One of my favorite fish to catch is walleye, you never hear someone freaking out when one keeps a few of them to eat. There is a lot more bass in this state ten there is walleye's. Just thought I'd throw some gas out there. Waiting for a match haha

We have had many discussions about implementing the catch and kill on the smallmouth at East Canyon. The issue is that how far back in time to we go with the implementation of catch and kill. There are also discussions about some chemical treatments of several waters in response to illegal stockings.

The way I here the story was that the smallmouth were accidently dumped in there by mistake during fish stocking, should have been taken to Jordanelle if I remember. So they weren't illegally introduced but accidentally..... I am all for CPR catch-photo-release...
Is the story I heard correct??

I have a similar problem trying to catch walleye's with crank baits, stinking trout keep hitting them. Pretty fish, just wasting time having my lure in them instead of in the water where a walleye may hit it.

That is absolutely not true. The smallmouth got in East Canyon the same way the crappie did and the same way the yellow perch ended up in Starvation, the walleye ended up in Red Fleet and the smallmouth in Grantsville, illegally.

I'm not for illegally introducing anything. With that being said, the perch in starvation sure seem to have done well for the walleye's. Reminds me, I need to get to starvation and catch both. I'm getting hungry, must be lunch time.

There is nothing wrong with a proper release to the fillet board. Especially if it is a big Laker.......[:p] Although I have never caught a big one my self and don't really care to eat them myself but my fife and daughter seem to like the trout and char pretty good.

You talk about helping the fishery, Let me rewrite that...
You talk about illegally planting fish, but what have you or the DWR done to make our fisherys any better????
The perch in Starvation sure seem to help that place out...
The bass in East Canyon don't get worms on them like the trout have...
So have the DWR did anything in this way???
The shad in Powell was said by the DWR that they would hurt the lake ...Has it, or have they hurt the lake???
I'm looking for anything other then planting trout that the DWR has done, can you help me out???
If something works why does the DWR want to kill it???
I know that for every one to plant what they want could be bad...And should not be done that way....But how else can fish like shad, the perch in Starvation get done????
How many years was both of those lakes in bad shape???
Yuba has been in bad shape off and on...Something like shad that is open water may help it, I have heard that other minnows have been put in Yuba...But they are all small and can't hide from the other fish....
Just a few questions, can you say...

An illegal activity is an illegal activity. Not to mention possible disease and other critters that might absolutely destroy a fishery. This is the reason that even a good idea takes time. If you don't leave things in the hands of the professionals there are often times consequences. The consequences could be legal or ecological. Being an angler doesn't qualify anyone to become a fisheries biologist. Just like owning a gun doesn't qualify anyone to become a police officer. I would really step back and think about defending these actions a a good thing. The ecological consequences although slow are often much more devastating than any legal action.

Hey brody, give me a point of contact at maniac custom lures so I can get them to hopefully donate some fishing items for the DAV outing. I just volunteered myself to help get gear. PS: when we going fishing, you owe me a outing???
PS. if dwr had anything to do with it then it was accidental of course. I have a hard time believing a few die-hard fisherman could bring in enough smallmouth bass to support the lake with a decent population....
and for Tubedude: never whining just loving the smallies that is all..... Great lake for them to grow big so I can catch them again and again....

[#6000bf]I couldn't agree more. Promoting an "illegally" stocked fish at these lakes only encourages more of these idiots [/#6000bf][#6000bf]to do it again.[/#6000bf]
