MrWiskers, Chick, Awsome Evening for Bassin, 6-12-2009, Me, Myself, and I
#1
Left work today around 5 and called half of the forum members trying to find someone to go fishing with me this evening. Everyone was either out of town, going out of town, going to a cookout, doing honey do's (Billy), or fishing the Ratman. So around 7:30 I put in solo. Fish one spot all evening and flat wore fish out. It was the same spot Tyler and I fished last Friday and the fish were still there. The spot is deep water with structure and the fish usually suspend over the structure feeding on shad. Took me a little while to find out which part of the structure was holding the fish but when I did I did not move the boat for 1.5 hours and caught one fish after another. Ended up with 20 largemouth (5 keepers) and one spot. I had a problem boating fish tonight for some reason. Not counting the 21 I boated I hooked and lost about 10 with one going about 4 lbs and two going 3 lbs or so. Most of the ones I lost would come up completely out of the water and throw the spinner bait, swim bait, or silver buddy. I could not for the life of me keep fish on the silver buddy. The hooks suck. The 5 keepers I had went around 11.5-12 lbs with the best 3 going 7.5-8 lbs. Not bad. Would have had a really good sack if I would boat the fish I stuck. I also boated two small crappie.
Weapons of choice tonight were Sammy (got 3 keepers on it and lost a 3 lber), DJW spinner bait (got two keepers on it), Silver Buddy, Swim bait (lost the 4 lber on it), small crappie jig that Drumking gave me last fall (still tied on from that trip), and PowerMinnows. Pretty much anything that looked like a shad would have worked. Fish would not however eat a crank bait. They wanted the bait to be fish with a yo yo pattern.
Most fish came from an area the size of my boat. I would fish the baits list above in a rotation, then let the area sit for 5 minutes or so and rotate again. Everytime I would catch fish one of the baits during the rotation. Did not move the boat for 1.5 hours or so. Fish were suspended down about 5-10 feet over deeper water.
Not a bad evening for 2 hours of fishing. Was going to fish after dark but got tired and keep seeing what looked like lightening in the distance so I left at 9:30.
I tried to get Tyler to come down and join me but he is somewhat stubborn and would not come. I called him every 15 minutes or so to give him the updated count.emoEvil
