Indiana DNRs Lake Michigan Coastal Program Supports Local Projects

Indiana's Lake Michigan coastal area will benefit from the approval of 14 projects to receive $635,232 in federal funds, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources

The grant recipients will provide the equivalent in local match for a total of $1,270,464 that will be invested in projects that will improve public access and protect and restore natural areas in the Lake Michigan watershed.

"The 2009 funding cycle saw a great mix of projects," said DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program specialist Jenny Orsburn. "Applicants are submitting projects with strong coastal resource education and planning components as well as natural resource protection and restoration."

DNR director Robert E. Carter Jr. said "We are pleased to continue our support for coastal resource protection and planning. The coastal program staff works hard with applicants to ensure that projects are strong and address the priorities set by the Coastal Advisory Board.

"We thank all the staff and board members who provided input to this process."

The 14 projects are:

* Lake County Parks - Gibson Woods State Dedicated Nature Preserve: Restoration and Invasive Species Removal - $20,000

* Save the Dunes Conservation Fund - Natural Resource Management Training - $67,500

* Town of Dune Acres - Dune Acres Cowles Bog Restoration - $15,000

* Town of Schererville - Scherwood Park Environmental Enhancement Plan - $30,000

* Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center - What's in My Background? Raising Awareness of Northwest Indiana Parks - $12,000

* Indiana University Northwest - Introductory GIS Systems Education in the NW Indiana Lake Michigan Coastal Area - $12,750

* Purdue University - Concurrent fine-scale mapping of near-shore water quality and larval fish dynamics: Insights to potential climate change impacts on fish recruitment - $99,127

* LaPorte County Commissioners - LaPorte County Regulatory Update - $82,640

* DNR Division of Nature Preserves:

o Bur Oak Savanna Protection - $150,000<br />
o Prairie and Marsh Restoration, Norco Tract, Hoosier Prairie - $30,000<br />
o Pine Station South Savanna Restoration - $20,000<br />
o Calumet Prairie Typha Control - $13,500

* DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs:<br />
o Indiana Dunes State Park Bird Observation Tower - $75,000<br />
o Indiana Dunes State Park Biodiversity Restoration - $7,715

The DNR LMCP was created to coordinate efforts between local, state and federal governments, as well as local organizations, and to support projects that protect and restore natural, cultural and historical resources in Indiana's Lake Michigan Coastal region.

The LMCP is funded through the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Coastal Resource Management.
