Popper and I started out shallow, along with a bunch of other boats, amongst the grass. Had a very good fish blow up on my buzzbait and had him for about 3 seconds before he came unbuttoned. It seems my trailer hook wasn't as sharp as it should have been. Tossed a Zell Pop and had a good blowup but she buried me in the grass. Popper finally got the skunk out of the boat by catching our first keeper on a Ribbit. We contiued fish topwaters and I landed 2 more keepers. One on a chrome/black Spook Jr. and the other on the Zell Pop.
We ran a short distance to a stumpy point that held fish last week. We fished Carolina rigs and Texas rigged worms with no luck. We watched a strong squall line approach. I normally ride these things out, but this thing was tossing lightning at the water every couple of seconds. We made a mad dash to HB Marina and found shelter underneath one of the large covered docks that was unoccupied. Two other boats joined us a minute or three later. Stayed there for an hour or so till the rain let up. Ran back out and fished the rest of the tournament fishing shallow again. Caught a few squeakers but no more keepers. We weighed in our 3 at 7.65 lbs and a 4th place finish. I won a $10.00 gift certificate to O'Charley's and a very nice weigh bag. Enjoyed fishing with Jerod who won the best prize of all.....a case of Little Debbie Snack Cakes.
Water temps stayed at 80 degrees and relatively clear. Caught all our fish in water 4 feet or less. I'm sure they were pulling current but it was hard to tell where we were fishing. Wind was a problem most of the day.
