Hi all...I'm new to this board, and fairly new to fishing in Southern Nevada. I recently renewed my love for the sport, especially largemouth bass fishing, but stripers too. I had a few questions:
1) Does anyone know of any good spots to shore fish for bass at Mead this time of year? Largemouth or stripers.
2) What about when the spawn hits? Any good shore fishing spots?
3) Since I don't have a boat, I'm sort of looking for a fishing buddy. I could split expenses.
Thanks! Great site!

Try Boulder Harbor. Bass are deep or suspended this time of year. More likely to catch a striper near shore as they forage for shad.
If you like tournament bassing - check out the local clubs - Bass Federation. Go as a non boater.

reel,
I was out at Hole 33 a couple weeks ago, and could see the shad breaking the surface with stripers chasing them, but they were mostly out of casting range. The times the schools got into casting range, I couldn't coax a bite out of the stripers underneath them. I tried topwaters, jerkbaits, cranks, spoons, all in a shad/silver pattern, and nothing...am I missing something?
And I will look into the local clubs...I've only fished one tourney in my life, but it was a blast...be good to get back out there and meet some folks in the process.

Nevada Bass Anglers meets tomorrow night at Lake Mead Lounge in Henderson at 7pm. Same place the striper club meets if someone wants to post about them as well
New year just starting so get in. Non boaters are welcome and club is set up so the non-boater competes for AOY which is 600.00 toward US Open +.
All you local park guys and shore fisherman, this is the way to get out on mead and mohave in a boat.

Got it...yes that's some good info. And I completely agree about the no sinkers thing. Never caught anything at Mead using a sinker, or with anything heavier than 8lb test for that matter. Maybe the largemouth would be different, i.e. Carolina or Texas rigs, but for stripers and carp I can see going without. And yes, I occasionally fish for carp (even have my own bait recipe that kills!). For someone without a boat, when the bass bite is slow, carp can turn a no fish day into a good fish day...
The jighead/anchovy thing sounds interesting...worth a try at least.
And I know I'm seriously limited by not having a boat, but hopefully I'll be able to meet a few boaters who wouldn't mind a partner on occasion...since I work from home, I make my own schedule, so I've got the time during the week!

Hello,
You can fish from shore on boulder beach or at the boulder launch or over at crawdad cove for stripers right now. Early morning or late afternoon. Cast big top water plugs or cast wake baits or anything that looks like a trout. A lot of fish are caught from shore dec to the end of March. Mostly stripers.
Down at the fishing piers people catch shad early morning and then cast them out with pretty good luck.
Nevada Striper Club also has there meeting this thursday night at Lake Mead Lounge.

Well, I took your advice and hit crawdad cove yesterday. Fish were jumping at dawn, threw topwaters and trout colored lures with no luck, so I switched to frozen anchovys around 10. They did the trout plant about 11am, and everyone ran over and were getting a lot of trout but a few stripers. They said they saw them, but couldn't get a bite. I didn't want to go with the crowd, so I stayed on the other side of the point. Around noon I hooked what I guess to be about a 3 pounder, but it flipped over on the line at shore and broke off, but a good fight anyway. And that was it...
A guy on a boat caught a 20+ before the plant, and another boater was saying he caught a 32lb near there, other than that it was slow. Might try Boulder Harbor next time.
Hope as spring comes on, it gets better, especially for largemouth. Seems like the fish are very spread out right now, and are exclusively following the baitfish.
