ROE RECOVERY FISHERY ANNOUNCED FOR SOLOMON GULCH TERMINAL HARVEST AREA

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is opening the Solomon Gulch Hatchery Terminal Harvest Area to the harvest of pink salmon for roe recovery. The department anticipates the first common property opening for the roe recovery fishery will occur on Wednesday, July 9, 2003. The exact times will be announced in a subsequent news release.

This action will apply only to fish that are harvested in the Solomon Gulch Hatchery Terminal Harvest Area. These are fish that cannot be put to other lawful use or given away free to food banks or to members of the public.

The meat from these fish has or will soon deteriorate beyond the stage that it can be marketed. If not harvested, these fish will die on the beaches or will stray into nearby streams and mix with wild pink salmon stocks. Neither of these outcomes is desirable, according to the commissioner of Alaska Department of Fish &Game.

To prevent the above from occurring and to recover some value from these fish, the commissioner has made a finding under Alaska Statute 16.05.831(b) that authorizes salmon roe to be harvested for its value. This harvest is consistent with maximum and wise use of the resource.

The state is requiring all harvests be recorded on ADF&G fish tickets, reporting the date, time, location, and quantity of roe harvested, as well as the total number of salmon carcasses.

The disposal of pink salmon carcasses must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws. Processors, catcher/processors, and the hatchery operator participating in the roe fishery should contact the Department of Environmental Conservation to make sure their operations are in compliance with regulations regarding appropriate disposal.
