The Greyling trip(report)7/18/03
#1
On Saturday July 19th. I fished Round lake, Sand lake and Fish lake for greyling with some success. I lefted the Dry fork/ fish lake trail head around 6am and hiked up to the lakes. On the way up I saw 7 Deer, 2 with horns. I saw a rabbit that was the size of a medium size dog. I heard wood peckers and hummingbirds.[Smile]
I started at round lake with the fly and bubble combo with no luck. There were 2 guys fishing it when I got there so I didn't stay too long. I moved up to Sand lake and used the fly and bubble with no luck ,before long I switched to a mepps with a gold blade and caught a greyling on the first cast. Those Greyling were a blast to catch. They were small but it was fun catching them.It was amazing. The greyling would just cruise the shore and it didn't seem like they cared that I was fishing for them.I caught 7 in a short time. Then I moved up to Fish lake and switched to a black roostertail and the fishing picked up. I caught 13 greyling and 3 beautiful brookies. the brookies were about 13"long.[Smile]
The thunder and clouds to roll in so i started so to make my way back down the mountain.[Sad] I was amazed at the number of people that were hikeing up the trail in the rain and lighting. I passed a scout troop and some hikers. I made it back to the car around 2:30am
It was a 8 mile round trip to Fish lake. It was a hard rocky and muddy hike. I would rate it a 8 out of 10. If you try this hike bring a lot of water, food and bug spray. It was a great trip. I just wish that I could of fished them longer.

Great report Tincanfish. I have yet to try for the greyling. Maybe next year for me I am already after too many different species, if I add one more I might just drive my wife nuts.

An odd question she asked was "do you really need all these tackle boxes?"... hehehehe

I'm glad to finally hear of a greyling report. How long was the hike? My fishing buddy is a much older guy and I worry about taking him too far into the back country. So I need to know how long (distance & time) then I'll go from there. thanks

Nice report. Wish I could have made it there to. I couldnt make up my mind on going to strawberry or to catch some grayling. Ended up not doing either and wound up going to settlement reservoir with hustler and catching a bunch of crawdad. Still had a good time catching the critters though. Rather not stay out till 3 am either anymore unless im laying into some BIGFISH.[Wink]

Hey aquamen,
sorry it took long to get back to you guys.I gave it a 8 rateing because of the distance and the rocky footing most of the way. If you still want to make a trip I would be more then happy to go again before the Hunts start.

Hey ffm. Its a 8 mile round trip so the book says(utah fishing guide 2000) It felt every bit of it and more with walking around the lakes to fish.If you and fishing buddy took your time and spent the night or took horses I think it might be better. there are places to catch greyling off of mirror lake highway that might be a shorter walk.

Hey Tincan, the buzzers sucked on saturday. Only one two pounder. Go figure. I'm going to my favorite brown trout stream for the entire four days of the holiday. The Loomis fly rod has been getting dusty. Dutch oven taters and cherry cobbler and BBQ elk steaks and too much cold beer. Dang, my heads already there.

Enjoy your eats, elk steaks are one of my favorites, or should I say "FOOD" my favorite. How do you cook em up?

I cook mine with loads of onions and garlic on top. I use a beer & salsa marinade slow cooked in a covered fry pan. Melts off tyhe fork. Marinade over night then brown the steaks and turn down the heat. No need to hurry them along they will be done in time.

FFM,

I'll soak them for an hour in plain old Kraft Original BBQ sauce. Then I'll cook them over the coals. The trick is to not over cook them. You should try it, its very tasty.
