mead lake 2-3-2010
#1
started at bout 2pm till bout 5ish. landed 4, but we hooked a few more. right when we were leaving i hooked one and he fought like crazy and right at the bank he got off and i jumped in and grabbed him before he left. i thought he was alot bigger when i jumped in from the way he fought but he wasnot really huge. but he was decent. pretty good day at da lake though. our first fish of 2010. together we caught 16 different species in 4 states last year so we better get after it if we want to top that i guess

oh and the lake looks like its up a few feet now too. looks different

Thanks for the report and great pics montananinnv. It's always nice to get the ladies involved as well.

If you dont mind sharing what area were you shore fishing from? Also, what bait were you using?

Great post I was out all day on my boat 2-1-10 . We spent most of it opposite 33 hole we caught one tiny striper. That was my start for 2010. The ranger at the entrance gate told me the lake has risen 7ft. It did look a little different. I am sure it will only get better. I love the pictures I just wish I had some to show.

Ha! I love the picture of you holding the striper that you went in after! The wet pants show true dedication! What's the water temp, about 55 degrees? Awesome.

BTW, I went out Sunday and trolled and trolled and trolled for nothing.

we walked down from the hole 33 lot. there is tons of junk washed up next to shore all over there though. it was kinda tough to shore fish. we started in a little bay then went out on a point, much better off da point. only a few lil openings in the crud. like sticks and mud and cattails like ten yards out from shore, i tossed a rock on it and it didnt even sink. and we put alot of weight on first and casted way out and didnot really catch anything until we fished just beyond the crud. i think there is a bunch of bait fish under it. and a lot of carp sucking at the surface around it. i casted just about every thing in my tackle box on one pole and bottom fished with my other with cut chovies. chovies were the only thing to catch a fish though. hope this helps

Have you ever tried fishing chovies with out weights? I heard and read on here that the stripers can see the sinkers and do not bite.

it probably would have worked good the other day when we fished closed to shore. it would be hard to cast out deep. i usually use a bullet weight and set it up carolina rig style or put a bell sinker at the bottom like a drop shot set up. man i want a boat though. boats the way to go for the big guys out there

I have a boat but none of my friends are into fishing. (sounds like i need new friends huh?) I am always interested in meeting new people and espically ones that like to fish. Right now I am very busy with my business degree but this summer I am going to fish all day and night.

LOL...that's just another reason why this board is a good resource. Not only do you get fishing info...but you can also meet people to fish with and share boats, tackle tips, etc.

I'm a non boater (for now) but thanks to this board I've meet some good people and even had the chance to get out on the water with them!

Sharing is caring! [:p]

Once school is out for the summer I am open to taking who ever along. I want to learn striper technique from some one who knows what their doing. I can catch trout decently since I have been fishing them since before I could remember with my grandfather. Stripers on the other hand are very hard to catch. Altough I guess I am not the only one coming home from the lake with out any catch. Even the guys that catch the monsters on the board seem to come home empty handed quite often.

Last summer thru fall we left the boat in the truck (10 ft tracker) because the striper were a cast away.
We fished boxcar and crawdad with cut bait for 40-50 fish days.

This year I have a bigger boat and will have more range.
Me and my brother-in-law have fished Mead from the shore and boat 5 years now and 2 years were a learning experience. Little or no fish until we stopped fishing like we did at other lakes.

BFT is a great added resource so is joining NV Striper Club, knowledge is the key.

Sounds like you figured it out. I would love to learn from you. I feel like they way I am attempting to catch the stripers is a waste of time.. I know I am missing something in the formula of producing stripers.

I'm sure everyone will agree...you never really have it 100% figured out...but you can get close.

From my experience striper fishing and researching striper behavior, stripers are a unique animal. They are unlike any other species, and you have to go after them as if you don't know anything. Get some tips from people who know, and go out and experiment, experiment, experiment. Eventually you'll figure out a pattern that fits your fishing style. And while general striper behavior seems to be true no matter what body of water you're on, even individual lakes will have stripers that like certain baits, lures, and presentations that may be completely opposite of what you're used to on your home lake.

Part of the fun is figuring these fish out (and it takes some doing sometimes)...the other part is watching a big one double over your rod and strip line like a freight train!!

I've been fishing my whole life, most recently for stripers, and I have to say, sometimes it's almost like you can hear them laughing at you as your lure swims by...[:p]

My next step is getting to a Striper Club meeting and learning a few more things!

Yes Sir, you are correct! Always learning and trying new things. At times we would be spoiled with a cooler (105qt) full of fish, the next weekend same spot and technique and nothing.

Stripers swim, eat and make more stripers, they don't even stop to spawn. These fish are NOT structure oriented like LM Bass. They follow the food source like shad and trout school them up and feed.
