There was also that bear attack on the fisherman in eastern Utah that was floating down a river with a group. He was drug out of his sleeping bag during the night but survived with some help from his friends. He had to be flown out of the remote area to a hospital. WH2

Just another indication that they really need to be put on the endangered species list. I have actually had one stalk me while I was fishing on the Sevier River above Piute. Really scared me bad. Now I don't go anywhere without my .243. Like I say, kill em all big and small. Seriously thought, this really makes you think about your safty.

One cat in the mountains is too many cats in the mountains. Lets make em like the wolfs and grizzlies, and kill them all! Erraticate them in Utah, and there will be more deer and no more incidents like this. And yes, it is the same thing as California now. These cats are preying on humans. YOou really just need to kill them all.

Like everything else on earth. Cats are put here for a reason with a high spot in the food chain for a reason. Killing them all would do no good. Only hurt the animal populace.

I wouldn't say eradicate all the cats they serve their purpose in life. I would like to see them controled more since they can't even count them. If you read the above link it looks like they are uping the tags 100 tags over 2 years. I would like to see them increase that number or do some control hunts to reduce the numbers so the wildlife can rebound.

If deer are what you want more of kill those coyotes.

Jensen, I've read plenty of stupid posts on this site, but yours has to take top honors. I question what must have happened to a person in his life to make him believe he has the right to eradicate a species from existence. Open your mind.

Coyotes don't kill as many deer as cats do. Figure the coyotes kill about 1 deer a month, which feeds 10-20 of them. The cats kill about 1 a week, piss all over it, then bury it. Trust me, I was after a 35 inch buck last year, and a cat got to him before me. Besides that, they kill the bucks, unlike coyotes, which get other stuff besides them. I've seen them chase after rabbits when there are deer sitting within 300 yards of them. A cougar would have stalked and killed them.

Hi-

I am from Okinawa, Japan. I just found Float Tube part of this site recently.I always open Big fish tackle front page and I see 'Hot Topics' always are comming from Utah message board, so I came to investigate why so many posts come from here. You must have many outdoor sportsman in Utah, and there is very much interesting discussion here.

I do not know anything about specific details of Utah ecosystem, or predation cycles or fishing, so I cannot post much useful informations for Utah citizens. But I have some interesting thoughts about this idea and it is not based on any specific type of system. It reminds me closely of sharks in the ocean. Some, but not many, fisher people in Okinawa do not appreciate sharks. Without sharks there would be many dramatic changes in all ocean ecosystems in the world. It makes me Sad when I hear any outdoor sports person think or say 'Kill them All' especially if they are natural species, there are many terrible reasons for this.

I have strong belief that many sportsman have good appreciation for nature. I had to find what is Mule Deer Buck online, it is very beatiful animal. I dont understand some poster's thinking ways, please explain to me. I mean this especially to JensenKid15.

I find from online sources that hunters kill bucks for antler size, much like us fishers like long lengths and high weights for trophy. So I understand that you like largest bucks. I tell this to fisherman in Okinawa fishing association members who hate sharks. Sharks eat and remove only sickest, or weakest, slowest or stupidest fishes from prey species. The largest and strongest and smartest fishes survive to make more larger, stonger, smarter fishes. Cougars cannot take strongest deer from population, cougar is very smart animal, it takes easiest meals much like shark. If what you say is true that cougar takes large buck of mule deer, then it must have been sick or injured or weak. but you would have killed it anyway., maybe the cougar will let you have the antlers? You think your love of deer is greater the others love of cougar, that is very selfish and not logical. Think of how humans are predatory, we like to take the biggest and strongest away from natural population of animals, this creates weak genetic species. In many years we create entire species of weak fish/deer, that cannot survive well in nature, and we destroy all of our trophy that we enjoy so much. If you ask any of the older generations everywhere, they will tell you of times when hunting and fishing was not so easy, and we could only harvest weakest members of species. They also will tell story of how great these species were long time ago. My grandfather tells me of times when tuna were 3 times larger then now. This is logical to me. If you have true love for deer, why don't you only harvest small weaker ones? This will work when there is problems with not much foods for large deers. Natural predators are very good for its prey species, human predators are sometimes bad for its prey species.

Like fishing, and nature, and all ecosystems, you must look at large painted picture an what is effect of these actions. I also research what is PETA, I am not PETA. I love to harvest fish, I love to eat meat, I would hunt deers if we had deers on Okinawa, and sometimes I spank my dog if he takes my fish. But I will never say about any species 'Kill them all', I hope my thoughts can make you think different if only for short time. Also I read that cougar can survive from only 20lbs of meat protiens a week, and when it burys it is for cache? I also read that cougars main prey is small mammals?

Cougars kill one deer a week and that's more if it has babies. I wouldn't say kill them all because they do serve a purpose in life just like you and me. I do think they need to control the numbers so we all can enjoy hunting and wildlife. Lions are the only predator that have killed just for fun and not for food like most people think.

If you don't think coyotes kill deer just think about this. The highest in numbers and most uncontrollable predator in Utah and most of the country is the coyote. Since they quite using poison to control their numbers the populations of deer have dropped considerable. This drough is making it tough for all predator so they kill anything they can to survive.

I've heard that they have a real problem down in Joe's Valley area. Not only is it inpacting the deer herds but the elk as well. A guy here at my work has a cabin up there and people around him are seeing lots of cougars now. Way more than usual. The population is really skewed badly. Even with that control is needed, not elimination of a species.

Those are very wise words myu, and make alot of sense to me. What you say is basic, that there must be a balance to everything! Welcome aboard myu and im looking forward to future posts, be they from japan or any advise or techniques you may have to offer that may give us a more productive fishing experience. Id also enjoy pictures of certain areas you enjoy fishing and species of fish you like to catch.[Wink]
