North Carolina to hold public meetings on fishing, hunting
#1
RALEIGH, N.C. (December 15) - Additions to the Public Mountain Trout Waters program, a statewide length and creel limit for muskie, a change in squirrel season dates and additions to the game lands program are among the 2010 proposed changes to the state's hunting and fishing rules.

In January, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hold its annual series of nine public hearings across the state, inviting public comments on proposed changes to hunting, fishing and trapping regulations. After hearing public comments and reviewing written comments, the Wildlife Commission will meet in March and vote whether or not to adopt the proposed rules.

The public can also visit www.ncwildlife.org to comment online or submit comments by mail to 1701 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1701. Comments must be submitted before January 22.

Fishing proposals include adding Wildcat Lake and almost two miles of Elk Hollow Branch in Avery County and a two-mile portion of the Yadkin River in Caldwell County as designated Public Mountain Trout Waters. Another proposal designed to simplify muskellunge regulations will establish a 42-inch minimum size limit and one-fish-daily creel limit for muskellunge for the entire state. The Commission also proposes a reduction in the minimum length of largemouth bass caught in Jordan and Falls of Neuse reservoirs.

Hunting proposals include extending squirrel season to the last day of February and creating two new game lands - one in Ashe County and one in Bladen County. The Commission also proposes allowing government or nonprofit entities conducting organized hunting events to obtain exemptions allowing all participants in these events to hunt without first obtaining hunting licenses.
