Kentuckians Take Pickwick King Kat

This past Saturday March 20, 2010 the Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail held a local qualifying event at the Sheffield, Alabama Riverfront Park on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes. 125 anglers from 14 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2010 Cabela's King Kat Classic to be held on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway at Columbus, Mississippi November 12th & 13th.

Over 200 spectators were on hand to cheer on their favorite anglers in this event with a beautiful day in Sheffield reaching the low 70's. Nearly $12,000.00 in Cash and Prizes were awarded to the top 11 teams in this tremendous event.

Cabela's King Kat Pickwick/Wilson Top 5 Results:

Taking first place with 175.8 pounds was the team of Rob Benningfield of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Ed Moore of Louisville, Kentucky. Rob and Ed were fishing in 10 feet of water on Wilson Lake using skipjack catching a total of 10 fish for the day. Teams are only allowed to weigh in their top 5 fish for the day. The team also weighed in big fish of the day at 70.65 pounds. Rob and Ed earned $3,400.00 for first place and $500.00 for big fish of the event.

Second place went to the team of Grant Volner of Oakland, Tennessee and Ronnie Strickland of Millington, Tennessee weighing in 138.9 pounds and earning $1,800.00. Grant and Ronnie were fishing down river on Pickwick using skipjack in 10-12 feet of water. The team caught about 25 fish for the day.

In third was the team of Justin Cook of Fayette, Missouri and Gary Ryan of Columbia, Missouri with a total weight of 115.7 pounds and earning $1,150,00. Justin and Gary were fishing Wilson in 20-30 feet of water using skipjack to catch a total of 7 fish for the day.

Fourth place went to Ray Ferguson of Powell, Tennessee and Cody Davis and James Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee with a total weight of 107.95 and earning $900.00. Ray and Cody were fishing several different depths on Wilson and finding their best luck in 20 feet of water and catching 12 fish throughout the day.

In fifth place was the team of Jason Jackson of Piasa, Illinois and Ryan Casey of Imperial, Missouri with 89.25 pounds and earning $700.00. Jason and Ryan were fishing Wilson in 24 and 35 feet of water using skipjack catching 13 fish for the day.

Cabela's King Kat Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Cabela's King Kat held their Kids Fishing Rodeo on Saturday morning with nearly 100 local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for this Fall. We want to thank Foodland who provided free hotdogs, chips, and drinks for the youngsters. Each year Foodland has been on hand to provide food and drinks for the kids at this event. We would also like to thank the City of Sheffield, Sheffield Parks and Recreation for their help and support each year at the kids event.

Cabela's King Kat and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Cabela's King Kat "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
