drove up to echo canyon monday. long drive but it was pretty fun. I caught 2 largemouths on a crank bait, then starla wanted to catch a crappie real bad, so i tied a yellow crappie jig on her pole and she caught 2 bass right away. and i caught another on a pink tube bait. and she caught a rainbow trout on the jig and ended with one last bass. all together we got 7 bass and 1 rainbow, no crappies though like she wanted. we caught them all over the lake too. pretty fun.

it took bout 4 hours but we stopped in calienta for a bit. if you went straight it would be like 3.5 or so. its a cool lake. i think we might have jumped the gun a little on it though. there was still snow on the edges in some places. we got 7 bass, but we fished from like 11am-7pm. in another month or so it will probably be crazy fishing up there. your kayak would be awesome on it too, if it wasnot super windy like this weekend

[cool]I fished Echo a few years ago in my floattube. Went around Memorial weekend. Used a 4wt flyrod and ultralight spinning. Got lots of small LMB,crappie, and trout. Used olive or black woolybuggers on flyrod and Powerbait trout worms along with small spinners on UL outfit. You can reach alot more fish in the reeds and weed patchs when on the water. Some bigger bass(5lbers) do come out on occasion. I'll try to find some pics to post.

This must be a fairly new reservoir. I'm an Ely NV native & have never heard of it. Course I've been gone from there for about 50 yrs. Care to share the location? PM if ya don't wanna hotspot it.
Thanx

I think the reservoir has been around since the 60's or 70's. Its right outside Pioche on the way to Eagle Valley reservior.

i think the sign there said it was made in 1969. its bout 10-12 miles outside of pioche off highway 322 i think was the number. its not a real big lake, but it was pretty fun. I think my girlfriend is the only person i ever met who would rather catch a crappie than bass

You can save 30-45 minutes depending on speed/road conditions by taking the Rainbow Canyon cutoff dirt road just south of Alamo, it will take you past the apple orchards near Caliente. If you have a tube or kayak check out Nesbit Lake just north of Alamo. You will catch some crappie there as well as bass. Just turn right instead of left (towards Caliente) and look to your right, Nesbit is the second lake on the right with the gate. The gate is unlocked just drive in and close the gate.

I heard Echo Canyon is having a fishing lottery. Sign up is 30 bucks and you have the chance to catch a tagged fish that is worth 50,000. There are also several 100 dollar fish. Has any one ever participated in this event?

In the past years Echo Canyon has done a fishing derby on free fish day in June. Its alot of fun. They also did the tagged fish thing but I think that included Cave lake and Spring Valley State park up the road from Echo. If you google Echo Canyon State park NV you can click on the state parks page to bring up Echo. There is a email address that I have used for questions and they always seemed to answer fairly quick. Several years ago they gave all kids under 12 a zebco and little tackle box. Kids loved it. When the day was over they had about two cases of power bait and some tackle they just gave away. They also had a drawing for a 16ft Aluminum boat. I haven't been up there in a couple years so I don't know if it is as extravegant. But it was a blast!

I was told the tournament was May 1st at both reservoirs for tagged rainbow trout. I believe the Spring Valley SP or Eagle Valley resort will have more info. Sorry, i don't have the phone #'s right now.

From Google:
Number for Spring Valley SP is: (775) 962-5102
Number for Eagle Valley Resort is: (775) 962-5293
I did not call either, but did some web searches and was unable to find any info. Best bet if you're interested is to call either of these places as SmokinFlies suggested.
