My friend Jeff & I went to Magic Saturday after he got off work 10:00 am. We got there around 11:30 and it was beautifull.

Well then remember we are in Idaho and things began to change.

In the mean time Jeff hooked up with an 18" bow on a Stayner Ducktail in deeper water and all I could do was mark fish on my screen. The water was 45 deg and I was in 12fow.
The res. is filling and filling fairly quickly.

We were going to drive out on the road that follows the Big Wood but the rain puddles were a little deep and "muddy".

It was a good day and we visited with a F&G officer and talked about the bass. He said through the summer the camas arm has some nice bass 16"+ and in the fall to fish the rocks on the east, when they draw down. He also reminded me that Magic is a family res so there are no length limits on the bass.

Yes they were introduced by the "bucket biologist" or by another "jonny apple seed"
They are really grabbing hold and will change the fishery so go catch some bass.

Wow! I too am surprised by the bass. Lordy, I hate the amateur biologists; they almost always ruin a fishery. They certainly have done that with Lake Pend Oreille. Let's hope the presence of bass don't ruin what has been an excellent trout fishery. We have really hammered them the last three years. Thanks for a great report, Michael. Mike

I haven't caught a bass in Magic but have actually hooked one in the Big Wood just upstream from the reservoir in the past.
I went over to Magic myself for the first time this year this past weekend and had a good time. I caught 5 with bait from the bank in about 6 hours of fishing time. Next time I'll probably bring the boat along but it seems like early after ice off at Magic is typically better with slow presentations like bait.
I spoke to a gentleman that was out in a pontoon fly fishing and he wasn't having any luck.

Looks like a great spring trip.
I am not familiar with the reservoir, could you tell me where the Camas arm is?
Thanks.

I believe when you are at the lodge it's the arm right to the north and points toward the camas prairie.

Michael,
Thanks for the report. It is my goal to fish Magic a bunch this year. Embarassing to say, but I have never fished there before.
Any advice from anyone is more than welcome. Via board or PM. Thanks!

A local fellow over there, rather than lay off his construction crew, had them go down to Hot Springs landing and plow out a channel from the ramp, so the ramp will be functional much longer in the summer (and will open earlier in the spring!). This is good news, because those of us coming from the west will be able to save a lot of time, rather than having to go all the way around to West Magic Resort. I agree with earlier posts that the bank fishing will be best until the water warms up a bit. I always love my trips to Magic...some of the best tasting trout around, and definitely the hardest fighting!! Mike

I don't know if they can get up there but the malad, and up stream into the big wood around gooding and above has had Bass since I was a kid. I wonder if the MEGA big time water that we got a few years ago allowed them to go up stream? Like I said the big wood has had bass for at least 35 years that I know of because I used to fish for them there. Ron

My wife and I were up there a couple weeks ago and did well on the bank. I got a couple 17 inch bows and my wife got an 18 inch bow. It's a great place to go this time of year before it gets real hot outside. Not much shade there on a hot day.

We go a couple of times a year. Last year we didnt make it up till late June and we hammered them. 2-4 lb bows and 3 Browns, 5, 7, 7 lbs. We drag flies in 8-16 feet of water on the East side, close to shore. Fishing the edge of the drop offs, the sudden drops to deeper water. The Browns will hit and immediately head DOWN to 30-40 feet of water, makes for an interesting fight...

I fished the Camas Arm last Saturday and landed a 8.5lb brown and about 15 other bows between 13' and 17" and yesterday I fished by Lava Point and caught numerous bows between 14"-18". The water temp is 3 degrees cooler this week from last due to the storms and is nice and clear.

LOL That scenario never seems to change at magic the whole season. We do that and we'll troll a Rio Lake IV with electric motor on and off of 1st speed all through 16-18 feet on the edges. We use that technique when the winds come up.
ALL our 4-7 lb browns have come on (believe it or not) Stayner Ducktails....Big ones.

2dogs,
Nice Brown, any photos? If you don't mind me asking, what fly patterns have you been using? I hope to make it up there this week for a day if the weather is decent. Thanks in advance.
