Oakley report
#1
well the plan was to fish the south fork But do to unknown family visiting this weekend it wasn't possible. they wife and i slipped up to Oakley reservoir for a few hours this afternoon. Got on the water by 3 30 pm and fished till 7. caught 10 total. I was surprised at the size of the fish all were 16 plus with the wife landing 7 out of the 10 and the largest. yes i was schooled [:p]
Every boat had a stringer of fish and most were larger than average. I'm excited to see the quality of the fish being caught very colorful and bright blue backs [cool]
we fished mainly with small flashers.

Nice looking fish. I've never fished Oakley but I think it's time that I do. When will the walleye start biting?

Oakley is a great place to fish and catching one that pushes 4 to 5 pounds isn't the normal. Boating 35 to 40 fish a day isn't uncommon but there all smaller fish 12 to 16 inches. that's why i was so surprised to see it producing larger fish. One guy i talked to said he has been doing fairly well with the walleye But i didn't see any caught.

I haven't been to Oakley lately, but in the past have caught a few fat ones in there, mostly in the spring time. A couple that we caught were so stuffed with baby fishies, that they were spitting them up as we netted them. Small minnow patterns worked great.

These were all fat for sure and i have had good luck up there before with small rapalas. Might have to give those gulp minnows a try bet that would be good for the walleye too [fishin]

It is the same as Goosecreek Res. You go south from Burley to the town of Oakley then the res is just south of Oakley and is on Goose Creek. Some maps say Goosecreek and some call it Oakley Reservoir. I'm not sure which is officially the name. Most I have heard it is Oakley.

could one drag flies behind a float tube up there and catch fish? I've bank fished it a few times, but never done any good. usually better down by the dam, or up closer to the inlet?

Yes indeed i have one friend who fishes it regularly out of a float tube and does really well. he fishes around the tower. he has even caught quite a few walleye with fly rod using leach patterns

I too have used float tubes there. We were in the dam area and fishing the rocks on the west side. -- minnow patterns, dragonflies, and leeches.

Where is the boat ramp(s) on Oakley? I tried to find them on Google earth but nothing really stood out other than right next to the dam on the West side, and it looked like a dirt ramp more than anything. I'm hoping to investigate it next month so any help just getting there would be nice [Wink]

The ramp is on the west side about 3/4 mile from the dam Its a concret ramp until late in the year then its a gravel bar. The water is already low enough that its at the top of second ramp. I will go open google earth and get you longitude and latitude
