Pat and I got out this morning around 8:30 for a crappie fishing trip. We launched from Wolftever creek and caught a few small crappie there. 15 count with bg shads in various blue hues and 1/32 oz heads. They want a slow fall at the moment.

From there, we went upriver and fished several different spots, structures, etc and got into some really nice crappie. No tarps today, but 13.5 the longest and several over 13" today. All the fish were deep for us today. I don't think that we caught a shallow crappie. We were constantly in 20 to 35 feet of water and fishing river channel edges and vertical structures. 66 crappie caught and 1 large shellcracker, 1 spot, and 1 largemouth bass (keeper 16.75 inches). Pat and I stayed with BG shads all day today. I usually change profiles a lot, but the fish were on this early, so we just stayed with them. I changed colors some, but other than that, we just pitched the jig into deep water, talked for a while as the jig sank into the depths all the while watching the line. Many bites were detected when the line would suddenly go slack as if the lure had hit the bottom. When you are making a 20' cast into 30' of water and letting the jig pendulum down, it don't hit the bottom. SET THE HOOK! emoBigSmile

The shellcracker was almost a tarp as it measured 10.7/8 inches long and weighed almost 2 lbs. One of the biggest that I have caught in quite a while. I did have 1 tarp cracker last year, but lately most of the shellcrackers have been on the small side. At least the ones that I have caught. The shellie hit on a 18 count with a 1/16 oz jighead. All fish were released today. Don't need any so we didn't keep any, but we would have had a great 2 limits if we had wanted them.

Going with Norman (Labman) in the morning. Hoping for another good day of catching those elusive summer crappie. I love this type of fishing. We are going in my boat, so no fancy 3D images, no bottom scanning, no side scanning unless we happen to turn our heads a little bit. emoUpSmile Get plenty of rest, Norman. We are going to be out there for at least 4 hours. emoBigSmile emoEek emoGeezer
