Tilt boat trailer, no problem launching at Willard
#1
Launched at the north marina between 5:30 and 6pm, water did not even float the boat off the trailer(16.5ft alum) but with a tilt trailer that's no problem. Water was less than one foot in some areas until 10 or 15 ft before the channel opens up into the lake. We got on the boat and about 10 feet past the buoy we were able to put the trolling motor down, water temp was 87 degrees. There are three small islands on the right and one one the left as you go straight out into the lake, after two hundreds or so it is clear sailing. We went four hundred yards and caught our first wiper, so we continued until we were 75 yds from the north dike and in 11 foot of water. We went in another 25 yds and at 8ft of water we caught another wiper, we were marking a lot of fish so we kept heading west toward the light pole. After a mile or so I caught a small cat and that was when the wind came up. We turned around and headed back toward the north marina, in the same spot that we caught the second wiper we landed our third and final wiper of the evening. Birds were diving in the area and we caught the second wiper by a pair of snowy egrets, if the wind had not come up I think we would have seen more surface activity. We used the tilt feature again as we loaded the boat but it would have been nice to have an electric winch to pull the boat up the trailer. All in all a nice evening on the bay. The guy at the pay station said they were getting the permits that are needed to dredge the north marina. The way he talked, it sounded like the south marina was a lost cause, oh well, at least they are going to do something with the north marina. Hey Fishcrazy, how did you do? WH2

Thanks for the report, WH2! Sounds like it could of been a killer night if the wind hadn't showed it's ugly face. Any ideas to the time frame in dredging the north marina? Now would be the perfect time to also extend ramps, etc.

Also, 87 degrees water temp! Wow, plenty warm. Sounds like the wipers would be found in the deeper water areas to get to cooler water for relief after feeding. From what Tom Pettengill said, the striper part of the wiper has a hard time tolerating warm waters for extended periods of time. Again, Thanks for the report. I wish I could launch.

I did not ask them when I was there Sunday, so as soon as I got off line yesterday, I called them at the north marina. They said they have to get the permits first, so they would find out in two weeks. I ask them about extending the ramp and they said it was a funding thing, so first of all they would dredge the channel and then if they could get more money they would extend the ramp. I was very surprised at the water temp but as soon as we started catching fish it made it hard to leave the area and head to the light pole, plus the wind came up so I gave up on trying to go that far. I'm still having problems with my motor not getting up to speed, just like the time you and wiperslayer and I were at bear lake, time to get some Sea Foam. WH2
