Flies or Tackle for River near McCall
#1
Can you all help an Alaskan visitor out. Got a good lead on a hole from a church friend over near I guess "sheep bridge" by the airport in McCall. My cousins headed over there and said you could see plenty of fish (a ton they said) but they would not take the Worms or lures they were throwing. They fished from about 8am-11am with no action at all.

I will be getting my license this weekend and heading out and was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for tackle for rivers with picky fish in this area. We used to kill them on worms and marshmellows at the now washed out Browns pond but I have never done actual river fishing here in ID.

Any advice is appreciated and if it will help I can give you some sweet Grayling Honey Holes in Fairbanks Alaska if you ever come up that way.

Our friends fish that area and always do good on worms. If that doesn't work I'd go with Mepps, Pather Martins or Roostertail spinners.

You're not going to say the Piledriver Slough for Grayling are you? [mad] I want a real honey hole [Smile]

Just kidding and good luck fishing!

There is better fishing around McCall than that part of the Payette River. I've caught some fish there but not enough to consider it good. The best fishing around McCall is in lakes but the South Fork of the Salmon on the road to Warm Lake is an option if you want a chance at some cutthroats on big fluffy dry flies. If you are interested in some lake fishing, send me a pm. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time in Idaho.

Thanks for the replys:

I can't be sure that they were Trout they were seeing as I was not there but I can only guess that my cousin who is usually at least pretty level headed would know enough to possibly know the difference but then again fish in the water can be awfully hard to tell apart for us novice fisherman.

We are heading that way Sat (Jul 16th) morning to try our luck so I will report back afterwards to let you all know how it went.

P.S. No I would not recommend Piledriver Slough for grayling (though they are still there). I have some sweet holes up the Chena and in the backcountry on the Denali Hwy. I can't wait to get back to them but in the mean time am excited (and could use additional help keeping it) to get into some Idaho trout fishing like when I was a kid.
