Chris, it sounds like to me you either need to use heavier line, or you need to loosen your drag -- or perhaps both.

you know what they say cant teach a old dog a new trick probley would'nt hurt me to loosen my drag a little i do fish it a little tight i think its a habit from when i used to use live mackeral on 25 and 30 # test line in the middle of kelp beds for big bull calico bass and you had to horse them out on a almost beat down drag

actually now that i think about it i spolled the 6# last wednesday but it might have been nicked from the rocks earlier in the day on my other reel i usually half fill my bait casters joining the line together with a blood knot i didnt realize i was out past the knot and useing a lighter mono then my superbraid was attached to until the line snapped

Because I was not used to fishing with heavier line, I lost a really nice Mackinaw at Bear Lake because I had my drag set too loose and was unable to get a good hook set. It gave BLM a good chuckle to hear the drag scream when I jerked up on the rod.

Even if you loosen your drag, six pound test line is on the light side for catfish at Utah Lake. Also, with the soup that exists down there, aka water, I doubt that line visibility in the water is much of an issue to catching catfish. Maybe you could get away with six pound test fishing from either a float tube or similar small craft, because perhaps you could go with the fish some, but fishing from shore, combined with the obstacles that are in the water at Utah Lake (that fish can easily wrap themselves around), many large catfish will head out and just keep going with six pound line.

That's right. Utah Lake is so murky, and especially at night, you could probably use a nylon rope and still catch catfish! [Wink] I was bummed last night cause I was looking forward to meeting fuzzyfisher and aquaman, but I didn't get out of my meetings until like 9:30 and would've got down there by 10:00 so I just decided to forget it. We'll have to go out again another night though. I use 8 lb. test now because I use the same reel for trout, bass, and catfish, but normally I would put on 12 or 14 lb. test for channel cats. Did anyone get any big cats last night? fuzzy?

Chris,

Meaning no disrespect, but if you are going to use line for backing, I would recommend it be at least the same test or stronger than the main line you are fishing with. One sure doesn't want to get into a nice fish, and then panic, because it has taken enough line out to reach the lighter backing. [#c2001e]But on the other hand, at least you hooked a catfish large enough to snap your line -- it has been far too long since I have managed to hook into one that I was concerned at all about it snapping my line.[/#c2001e]
