I was hoping for some advice and help. This Saturday morning I am planning on taking my 3 year old daughter(our oldest child) on her first fishing trip. I want to limit the distance we travel(from Herriman) so I was thinking of going to Jordanelle. I don't know what the fees are there but I don't want to pay a lot because chances are that we won't stay too long(short attention span. Not me, the girl!). I don't have a boat so I am looking for a place where we don't have to walk too far to get a good fishing spot and where we can fish from shore safely(no steep drop offs, etc). Obviously the goal is to catch fish and I would like to catch fish often enough to keep my daughter interested. Also, my daughter LOVES to eat fish so she will want to keep some for dinner. I was thinking that the perch at Jordanelle might be the ticket but I just haven't fished it enough to know where to go.
Can you guys direct me to a good spot on the lake and advise me on some some techniques that I can use with a 3 yr old? Also, any other suggestions about other lakes, such as Rockport. Anyone been to Smith and Morehouse recently?
Thanks in advance.

The entrance fee to the nelle is 9 bucks. I have not fished it from shore before so I really do not know where exactly to try. I can say that I have seen people fishing the fastest are the rock cliff side (via kamas) from the shore although I do not know of the size of fish. Another sure fire fishing spot and one that I take my kids to often is silver lake by brighton ski resort. It is alot less of a drive and the kids will catch fish all day long. I usually use a worm at jordanelle of the top about 24-36" leader for the first perch, then i use perch meat. They go nuts over that stuff, and so do the bass. At silver lake, worms and salmon eggs are the ticket as well as a small fly behing a bubble.
Good luck and have fun! My kids love fishing in those two lakes and I like it as well, keeps me very busy!

Sounds like a fun outing. What ever you do, bend the barb down on your hooks so the fish can "get away". My four yr old granddaughter loves to catch fish but doesn't want to release them. I figured if they "shake loose" at the shore and "get away" that's easier to explain than the catch and release concept.
Have fun and don't expect much but a fun time to what she decides to focus her attention on. Hopfully 10 minutes of her time will be directed at fishing! My granddaughter thought it was just as much fun to blow dandilions, play in the water etc and was a little scared when the fish flopped around, splashing water all over.

I will be at Jordanelle on Saturday morning!!! Unfortunately there is no way of getting out of the $9 entrance fee, unless you want to buy a years state parks pass for $70. The best place to shore fish with a small child would be on the rock cliff side or the lake, this is where the Provo river dumps in. YOu would primarily be catching perch and SMB, but with very constant action. As for bait, worms, grubs, jigs, perch meat all seem to work. Just cast out into area with under water structure and you are bound to find schools of perch. I will be up there, either on shore or on a boat, I will be wearing a yellow hat and a blue solid blue shirt. So if ya see some one fitting that description it might be me. But from what I hear any place in that lake between 6-15 feet with under water structure is prime for perch. Another place that I hear that has been hot is down the bank from the personal watercraft ramp on the Hailstone side, that would be realitively easy to fish from shore!!!

Yep. My daughter is partial to rocks. We took her to the park to fly kites. The wind was perfect. The kites flew great. She spent the whole time playing with a rock she found in the grass. The "get away" idea is a good one. Perch can be pretty small. Thanks BLM and OEJ.

Thanks polokid. I'll watch for you. 9 bucks? That is a lot, but I guess that is what it takes.

I took my neighbor and our two sons to Jordanelle on Sat. we fished the rock cliffs area due south of the end of the road. We didn't get there till 12:30 and left at 4:30 the four of us caught and released about 80 small perch and (6) 2 to 3 lb smallies. My 5 year old son caught between 25 and 30 5"to 6" perch and had a BIG smallie break his 6lb line, It almost pulled him out of the boat.
We fished in 5 to 8 feet of water, on the bottom, and 3 to 4 foot under a bobber, with worms, perch eyes, and 2" pearl tube jigs. Don't leave your pull unattended, the smallies will steal your pole. This was my first experiance with Small Mouth, pound for pound they fight harder than any trout you'll ever hook into.
It was a great trip for two kids.

Loanfish--Looks like your out of luck for the salmon fishing. My girlfriend is able to go after all. She will make a better sleeping partner anyway. LOL
