I hadn't been fishing for quiet a while now due to the extreme 90 + degree heat and all the unrelenting wave makers wreaking havoc on the waters. Schools are back in session now and I kind of figured a big portion of the nuisance for the crappie fisherman should be somewhat reduced for this season. Willing to give it a try today, I launched the boat around 7:30 with a light misty fog upon the water. The sky was completely overcast which just an occasional slight drip of rain upon my face. Water temp was 82 degrees and that Ole familiar smell of the lake filled my nostrils as I made my way over to the first fishing spot. With a 1/32 wide gap jig in hand I slowly loaded up the rod tip and let the liquorice / chartreuse BG Shad sail up under the dock. I then counted down, one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four, one thousand five, one thousand six, one thousand seven, one thousand eight, then started the retrieve. Then immediately FISH ON! and a touch of adrenaline filled my veins. If only it worked that way every time. Right?
Caught a couple of fish here which slowed very quickly. Then suddenly I had a thought. I recalled one of Labmans fishing reports where he would drop a jigging spoon to the bottom for a few moments then jerk it off the bottom a couple of feet then let it sink back to the bottom. I decided to give this a try with my BG Shad at the edge of the dock where I was fishing. Just might work, I thought to myself. I performed this maneuver a dozen times or so which enticed a very nice Smallmouth Bass to take my lure. Took just a little while to play him out with the 6lb Suffix line but I was indeed in no hurry. Thanks Labman! this one's for you. (pic included)
On out that way a bit I saw a dock I have fished before but was just completely destroyed. Appears a large red oak tree had fallen on it since my last visit. The tree has been removed but the dock is in definite need of repairs. Thats going to be expensive. Certainly glad this dock wasn't one that held fish.
Nothing much was happening out this way on the main channel and the increasing wind made boat control hectic. So out of curiosity, I decided to ventured into the back of a creek and give it a go. The sun had came out by this time and was trying its best to turn me into a piece of bacon. I fished a couple of 20ft depth docks back in the creek that were shaded from trees upon a high ridge. I started catching a few crappie under these shaded docks on a count of twelve but with the heat coming on fast and the AC calling my name I called it quits at eleven fish. I will just have return to these shady docks at a cooler time for further prospecting!
