Fished the BFL Super Tournament on Guntersville yesterday. I was in 16th place overall in the point standings on the Co-Angeler side going in. All I needed was to weigh in 1 keeper to make the field for the BFL Regional Championship Tournament on Lake Barkley next month. For me, that can be a tough order. Fishing the mats this time of year on Guntersville is something I loathe doing. I seem to attract only the dumbest fish in the lake. They will strike my frog a foot away, throw it 2 feet in the air, or get a mouthful of grass. That's if I get drawn with a Boater that knows where the fish are at. 99% of the Boaters I've been paired in the last few year didn't. And forget about them listening to you. Creek channel breaks on Guntersville are a great pattern this time of year too. I've caught many good fish that way in September. Anyway, weighing in one fish was less than a sure thing. Fortunately, I was paired with Tim Buckner who was on fish underneath the mats. It was a difficult day for most. 50 Co-Anglers ended up not weighing in a fish. I however, was not one of them. Caught my one and only keeper around 8 a.m. I needed nothing else and was satisfied to nap, piddle, and net Tim's fish the rest of the day. He ended up catching only 5 small keepers himself. I did wake up later in the day when we ran to an area in front of Mink creek to throw buzzbats. Only small fish doing that. So, I'll be fishing Lake Barkley on October 6th through the 9th. I've never fished Lake Barkley/ Kentucky Lake before. I suspect that they're similar to Watts Bar and Chickamauga. Anyone know if there's much grass on these lakes? Any suggestions on lure selection would be appreciated. I'm thinking shakeyhead, crankbait, spinnerbait, and jig.
