MrWiskers, Chick, CFF Classic - 1st Place, 10-16-2010, Jmax
Well, by reading the header to this post one would think Jmax and I had a grand plan for today's tourny. Truth is I had not been on the Chick since September 10th and Jmax only caught 2 keepers in last weeks CBA. Our plan was to junk fish our way through this one and hope for the best.
We started our day fishing docks. I had a frog tied on one of my rods for grass fishing and I wondered what would happen if I fished it around the docks. Well on my first cast I had one blow up but miss the frog. About 20 minutes later a WHALE of a bass jumps clean out of the water with my frog in his mouth. I actually yelled "NET" before I set the hook. Jmax turns around and about that time the beast comes clean out of the water. About 3 "NETs" and Jmax about falling in the water later we boat our first and largest keeper of the day, a really long 5.5 lber which would be good enough for big fish honors. This fish would have easily went 7 lbs in the sping but was rail thin. About 10 minutes later I hook a nice fish in the 2.5 lb range on the frog off the dock but it got off at the boat just when Jmax was going to net it. emoBang A little while longer Jmax gets our second keeper on a spinner bait. I will let him tell the funny story about this fish.emoEvil
We left the dock pattern and hit our grass pattern. Not 5 minutes into fishing the grass Jmax hooks a solid keeper on a spinner bait. I get the net stuck on one of his rods eyelets and the fish gets off at the boat.emoBang Two keepers in the boat and two lost at the boat. We continued to pound the grass with no luck for another hour or so.
We then hit one of the bluffs to try for some spots. Big fat Zero. emoBadLanguage
So off to some more grass. Big fat zero. emoBadLanguage
It is now 12 and we have 2 keepers with only 4 hours left to go. In desperation we hit another bluff again looking to get a limit of spots. Finally our junk fishing pays off. We quickly put two keeper spots in the well, one on a spinner bait and one on a shakey head. emoApplause We continue to hit the bluff looking for one more keeper spot. I set the hook and immediatly begin yelling for the net. Up comes our second big bass of the day, a solid 4 lber on a shakey head. Finally a limit. emoSun emoDance emoApplause emoBigSmile emoParty
With only 2 hours left we decided to make one more run and try to cull our spots. We hit a deep water chunk rock bank and got zero. We were headed to a deep water point but someone was on it so we decided to give our docks one more try. Ended up catching a keeper LM to cull one of our spots and I lost another solid keeper on the frog. emoBang Got another 14.75 incher and our time ran out.
So for the day we boated 18 bass and a keeper crappie on a rattle trap.emoScratch Out best 5 went just over 14 lbs with our big fish at 5.5 lbs. Good enough for 1st place and big bass. Jmax was also a member of the Towboaters so we also got the extra $500. Pretty awsome day. We also each got a $50 gift card to Smokey Mtn Tackle for our Anglers of the Year award.
Wanted to say that we had a ball fishing the CFF tour this year. Great run tournys. It was always great to shoot the bull with everyone each month. Looking forward to next year.
Thanks for fishing with me this year Jmax, it was a blast.
