Today's conditions: E wind @ 15, 3'-5' seas, no current, clean green water. There was no distinct blue/green edge. We started our day by catching live pilchards and herring. The bait was quite thick and it took about 40 minutes for my two anglers to put about 12 dozen baits in the livewell with sabiki rigs. We started in 400' (blue water) with dolphin (mahi-mahi) as our objective. When we got to 125', the break away rig hooked up and produced a 10# barracuda that we released. Meanwhile, the down rigger got hit and a toothy critter cut us off above the wire. Two drifts starting in 215' produced no strikes. We moved offshore to search for dolphin again. A frigate bird put us on some fish (785' and blue water) and we were hooked up to a 15# cow and 25# bull. We landed the cow, however, the bull gained its freedom at boatside, when the leader broke (don't ask me how). We found no more dolphin out deep and finished out the day with another drift starting in 200'. Even heavy live chumming didn't help today. We've got the wind and sea conditions, now if we can just get a good north current going, sailfishing should pick up.

Don't forget those gift certificates for that special someone in your life.
