Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Oregon Fishing Update

November 30th - December 6th, 2001

Fisheries update: The Columbia River gorge is marching on for keeper sturgeon although action has slowed slightly from the previous weeks. The drop in water temperatures will likely add to this trend.

Steelhead action is still worth checking on in the John Day Pool. The Sandy and Clackamas Rivers won't be so susceptible to the increased precipitation however plunkers in the lower stretches will likely be some of the more successful anglers this week. Try below the I-84 bridge on the Sandy and below High Rocks on the Clackamas.

The North Coast rivers will be high probably through the weekend so look to the smaller streams like the Necanicum or Kilchis if you want to fish. Steelhead on the N. Fork Nehalem and Necanicum and chinook will still be available though late December on the Kilchis along with a mix of steelhead and "incidental" chum salmon.

The Nestucca, Wilson and Trask will all be a bit high to fish for several days if the weather forecast pans out. Ocean crabbing opens December 1st. Minus tides over the weekend will provide clam-digging opportunities. The Elk and Sixes Rivers are producing chinook.

The Smith River has good numbers of winter steelhead present. Sturgeon are being taken on the lower Umpqua. Walter Wirth and Walling Pond will be planted this week.

Paid subscriber Brad H. writes: "Your reports are right on! I just became a paid subscriber and your sturgeon reports were right on! Made a trip after thanksgiving and we landed three keepers and many undersize. Thanks and keep up the awesome report!
