That rattlesnake fly would probable work well on a few of our low to mid elevation streams here in Utah. Are you tying any up yet? I'll volunteer to try one out and post pics if you do? As much as I try to avoid rattlesnakes I seem to run into several every year while fishing.

That is worth a try, there are several patterns on the net. I am trying to find out that this one was as it is LONG. I can try if you are game to try. If it can be done, I know you can do it. Got a good stiff heavy rod.?..LOL

Gray. Most rattlesnakes I see in western Utah from SLC south into the edge of the Mohave (yes there are trout down there too) are Great Basin rattlesnakes.

Fun video! The only downer I saw in it was that they had been out filming for 4 days and that was the only fish caught on the fly. Bummer! But what a nice fish!!

It looks like a string of 7 or so spun deer hair cylinders????? I would think a slightly smaller version done with rabbit strips on heavy mono would work too. Maybe about 7 to 8 inches long. Grey would be my choice too. I see a lot more of garter and watersnakes than rattlers.... thank goodness!

I was thinking 6 to 8 inches and like this one:

Or this one:

In grey. I already have the rattle dumbbells but I also have a bunch of beads.

I think I like the idea of the plastic rattle better. Seems like the bead chain would add more weight than needed. The head will push enough water to make a good wake or disturbance. Either look good. Now if I just knew of a good still water with some nice big fish that get hungry in the evenings! [laugh][laugh]

One thing I noticed on the video was that when he stopped stripping the fly contracted to an s or z shape. I was thinking that a core of heavy kinked mono might encourage a similar motion.

Fun ideas anyway! Bet they would be killers on the same places you would use a mouse pattern, or fish them tandem. Snake chasing a mouse. Can you imagine getting two big fish on at once? ---- no better not!

Any pics yet. Paulpro never replied so he may not ever have seen this. I've heard rattlesnake is a good pattern for the brackish waters of the Glades down his way.

Sorry, been busy elsewhere, but do seriously plan on sitting at the desk today. I am thinking I need to incorporate foam as to ensure it floats. Also, it crossed my mind that maybe I could add two stingers as there are many single lures out there that HAVE three hooks. I really got to experiment.
Bought some natural Zonker which I think the color will be perfect. But again the foam as rabbit will sink when wet.

The fish see the belly of the snake rather than the back, and I think it is a lot lighter in color than the top. I haven't tickled too many rattlesnake bellys so I don't know for sure!

An additional thought... you might be able to incorporate a sealed tube or two as floatant.
