Got a couple hours to enjoy this warm weather today. Since I was already up in Park City I decide to go the upper Provo in the National Forest. I don't combat fish and doubt I could even catch an educated fish on the Provo further down anymore anyway. Weather was perfect, the threatening clouds in the distance never blew my way. Fishing wasn't the fastest probably didn't even break into double digits. Surprisingly only caught 2 brook trout and one was almost a foot. The other surprised was that I managed a grand slam - catching all 4 trout species. You got to pay attention to something when the fishing is slow. I don't think I've done that since several years back on the Yellowstone on the south slope of the Unitas. My first fish was a 19 inch brown which was also a bit of a surprised but the 6x leader (no tippet) handled it just fine. All fish where caught on a size 10 or 12 foam hopper.

Picture aren't the best being out with just the dog. The cutt was an inch shorter than the brown but a thicker fish.

That Brookie is refreshing...it is actually proportioned. So use to seeing skinny big heads in rivers.

That net has an 19 inch opening so with out my hand in the picture the brown looks smaller than the cutt but it probably weighed about the same. Only a few basic secrets for the Upper Provo. One don't bother with it in Summer, the stunted brookies will drive you insane. Two use big flies ( size 8-12) no matter what you're fishing with or the stunted brookies will drive you insane. Lastly don't add a smaller dropper or second fly or the stunted brookies will drive you insane[sly]. Seriously the problem with hooking all those little brookies is it really cuts done on the time you spend with your fly in the water. You have to stop and unhook all of them. Worse some of them get launched out of water when setting the hook hoping it's a descent fish. As much as I'd love to just leave them in the forest I think that would be considered wasting fishing. I go track them down and return them to the stream. I fished it about 3 times in the first half of June and did very well. This was my first trip back since. I stuck with hoppers because they hadn't died off yet where I was fishing. This warm weather can't last forever and they'll be all gone soon. I thought about going for a whitefish as well as one stretch I fished always seems to have them in the fall. I didn't want to change to a smaller fly or nymph so settled for 4 species.
