Spinning beginner needs some help
#1
hello,

My name is Yarin and I'm from Israel. I want to buy myself a spinning rod so i would be able to fish from the shore.
a lot of people recommended a medium-fast rod with lures weight between 1/4-3/4oz. and the recommended length is 9feet. no i'm having trouble finding a rod with this spec and that would fit my budget (which is around 100$, on eBay would be for the best). my question is what are the differences between the rods length? how would a shorter rod works? opposed to a 9feet rod?
any help would be appreciated, and rods recommendation would be very helpful too.

thanks in advance, Yarin.

The biggest difference in a long versus short rod is going to be casting distance. you're going to be able to cast much farther with a longer rod. I would say if you need to get off the bank a pretty long ways to get into the fish, you should look for a longer rod. If you can settle for closer to shore and be productive, i'd go that route.

Also, I would not be looking on ebay for fishing gear. Basspro.com ships international, and they have one of the largest selections of quality gear of any store or internet based vendor. I'd start there. They also offer payment plans and all sorts of options. You should be able to find a very high quality rod and reel combo for under 100 dollars, shipped. [cool]

hi, thanks for the reply.

i searched a bit in basspro.com and pretty soon i realized i won't find what i'm looking for.
eventually after a lot of thought put into it i came to a conclusion that i want a 9' rod, medium with fast or moderate action, with lures weight of 1/4-above 1 is better.
the basspro didn't provide the goods Sad

i got three rods i found on the internet today, and it would be great if i can get an opinion on them..
shakespeare SP1186-2M or SPS 1186-2M
both are 8.6', medium, 1/8-58.
the third one is SST-S-862M from okuma with roughly the same spec...
if anyone can recommend something else that would be great (9' would be better than 8,6')..
after choosing a rod i will need some help understanding how to match a reel too Smile

thanks in advance, Yarin.

OK, i'm going to educate you.......

first off, basspro has a huge inventory of surf rods availible, well with in your price range. Follow this link. it will take you a the surf rod page of bass pro. from there, you can vary it by specific length. All the brand names under this catagory are high quality, even the cheaper rods like the Diawa beef stick:

As far as reel, i'd go with something all metal, and braid ready. You might be a little over budget, but it would be worth the extra money to know you've got a bullet proof outfit that can handle larger saltwater fish, and have the line capacity to actually catch them since you're stuck on the beach. I strongly recommend the Fin Nor Offshore series spinning reel, or all metal Penn reels in any series. But, if budget is all you can do, i'd go for something like the offshore angler sea lion spinning reel. It's still a decent reel and at a great price.

Don't pay that any attention, it will confuse the hell out of you. Pay attention to the pound class rod and action. If you have 200 bucks to spend, you're in very good shape. Go to that link, and pick up your prefered rod. Go for a Fin Nor offshore spinning reel. Pick the size that will give you the line capacity you need for the pound test line you're going to use. you will not be disappointed.

I have found the best way to find a product you're not sure about is at Amazon, or someplace that has user reviews. You can search products and people who have bought them review them. I use that a lot.
