I'm headed out in the morning to go bass fishing, I've got a dozen live mice to use as bait. I'm not going to lie-they are pretty cute. They will let you hold them, my kids thinks they are cool and they LOVE dog treats lmao. They are feeder mice, they were bred to be eaten and my old lizard used to eat the baby ones. I did a google search (fishing with live mice) and it seems that there is a lot of people that think its wrong to fish with live mice even though they are going to be eaten by some reptile. Your thoughts?
P.S. I've got a video of my lizard eating a 'pinky' if you want to watch it.

Live bait is live bait. We used to joke about a mouse harness just for that. Let us know how you figure out how to rig them. I'd try it.

We have done it here in Arkansas before...I don't see it any different than buying minnows to feed a fish in an aquarium. However, I think the most important question is....how many did you catch? lol

Thanks for sharing that,First time I see a bearded dragon eat a mouse ![[Image: surprised.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/surprised.gif) .I've only seen them eat meal worms and crickets.I've seen bass eat lizzards and snakes, and would like to see it also in the wild with a mouse.I thought of using a rubber band meathod,I know its but I'd just like to throw them in one by one, and see if they make it to shoar.I'm actually giving them a chance to survive in the wild after being raised in captivity[:p] I had lots of reptiles.
Quote:fish4fun05 they were bred to be eaten
I bought this duck at a place were you can buy ducks and even rabbits also"raised for food",so anyway it was going to get eaten anyway.[sly] "farm raised" Good luck..[fishin]

I'm thinking an elastic band behind the front shoulder with a hook under it like a wacky rig. You know now I will have to try it. Probable have to do it on my boat. God forbid a mouse got loose on a skeeter.

good luck and most of all have fun[ ].Here is my savanna monitor I raised, eating a baby Lukinani meaning Peacock bass in Guyanees."Rass, they also make awesome baitfish like you can't believe".Baby Lukinani are those kind of baitfish that tire out faster on a hook, but are very enjoyable.[inline 040.JPG] Perch remind me of Lukinani,to me they resemble each other. I like to get the perch color rapala cause it looks like the baby Lukinani.[ ]

Well, it was an interesting day. We rigged the mice by putting a rubber band around them and the hook underneath, they swim very well but some kind of small float would help. It wasn't as productive as I was hoping it would be, no fault to the mice, the lakes have been fished hard and I think we saw every fish that existed at least twice. One of the lakes (spring) was almost completely fished out, I saw about a dozen tilapia and four or five bluegill. It used to be FULL of bluegill! It was fun regardless.

Why the float? Do they need a life preserver to stay up? That might be a lot for a bass to swallow. No pun intended.

Well I wouldn't do it myself but if you don't see a problem with it they are your mice.
My own problem would be that mice are mamals and feel pain probably the same way you feel pain. Fear as well.
I guess I wouldn't but idk, minnows are cheaper and frogs are probably better IMO and don't have the same sort of nervous system as mice.
Im no tree hugger but if you are going to kill a mammal make sure you give it a clean death. I do sympathize with the little creatures of the planet I guess.

I'm sure you're a nice person in general.
But when I read this stuff about using live mice as bait, it makes me momentarily hope your wife miscarries at 8 weeks and your embryo looks like a pinkie drowning in the toilet.
When really what I mean is that IMO you shouldn't make other creatures suffer in fear for hours on end just so you can have a chance at MAYBE catching a fish.
Have a nice day.

Dude, this is not the best way to start posting on a forum you just joined. While we all are entitled to our own opinions you really need to look at nature before making a reply like that. Lions and all predators kill living things every day to survive and if your going to say don't use a live mouse for bait, why stop there, we should not be using night crawlers or worm for bait, they are alive as well. I suppose you are also against using traps that kill mice. I'm not sure why you are on a fishing web site, because that is the nature of the sport, killing. Oh, I get it, you are one of those anti fisher person types. Likely having never fished before[:|].

The mice thing didn't work and we felt bad for them so we let them go. They were raised as feeder mice so they were probably eaten by hawks or coyotes. I hope that guy isn't offended by that also. Good stuff tho! I thought I was a twisted individual, what he said was just gross lol.

We have all tried things like that, then moved on when they did not work as well as we hoped. I think there is a time and place for everything. I remember one member fishing at Cutler that used mouse traps to catch them, then caught some monster cats with them. My favorite was using frogs, at least when I was growing up in Colo. There was a marshy area beside the river where we were fishing for cats. I read an article about using frogs as bait and when we started hearing all these frog, we went over there and caught a few about two to three inches long. They turned out to be the best bait ever, at least in that spot. I haven't used bait like that in years, I found out long ago the lures can and do catch fish just as well, with a lot less mess.

Frogs make awesome bait. In California we cannot use live bait in freshwater unless they are nightcrawlers or crickets........But you should see how the Stripers and Catfish go for some of the feeder goldfish.
I went on an expedition with one of the local Fish and Wildlife biologists. We were doing a survey to see how big the Catfish were in the Aquaduct. We were using live goldfish that were nearly 5 inches long.
The Catfish were coming up at 20 to 30lbs. Nightcrawlers would only yeald the 10 to 15lb class fish. We also let down a few Pinkies and they bumped back up to 40lbs. Then the live mice would yield about the same as the pinkies.
These were all catch and release just like we do with our Bass but they were fun to stretch some line with. [cool]

The California Aquaduct has severl access points which are safe and legal to fish from. We are just not allowed to use anything but crawlers for live bait. The aquaduct is loaded with Channel Cats and Striped Bass. The Stripers dont get as big as in the Delta though. These are only in the up to 50lb range.[cool]

LOL, only up to 50 lbs, thats funny. I think most freshwater anglers would die to catch a 50 lb fish. The only freshwater fish I've ever caught over 50 was a sturgeon and that was totally amazing.

When I was a kid and lived in Sacramento CA, we used to catch 40 and 50lb Salmon close to our house. Then we could go to the Delta and catch Stripers that were 60lbs plus. We used to catch them on Shad. The Shad were the size of giant blue gills like ones we used to get at Pelican Lake. 3/4 to 1 1/2 lb.[cool]
