[size 1]1. The Sierra region is red hot with nice rainbows and browns showing from Bishop to Bridgeport. Crowds are gone for the season and it is quite possible to have a lake all to yourself most evenings. For a trophy brown, troll trout-like baits during nasty weather or right before an incoming storm. Grant Lake, South Lake, Bridgeport Reservoir or just about any lake in the area has a chance of kicking out a double-digit brown. For pan-sized and better rainbow trout, orange Power Worms, mini-jigs, or floating baits are almost guarantees throughout the region.[/size]
[size 1]2. The only reason this isn't our first pick is because all the reservations are gone and have been for a month, but Diamond Valley is the place to be this weekend. If you were one of the few who got a reservation look forward to wide-open bass and bluegill bites, and if you are a trout troller, the action should be awesome on fish to 6-0 or bigger in deep water. Remember only four-stroke motors and non-MTBE fuel are allowed on the lake. [/size]
[size 1]3. Three pieces of great news for Castaic Lake anglers. First, the lake will remain open for at least through the end of the year thanks to a bailout by Los Angeles County. Second, the striper bite remains wide open. Third, in addition to the deep-water bite, the stripers are now chasing shad on the surface and swimbaits and topwater lures are also working for these 2-0 to 12-0 class fish.[/size]
[size 1]FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS[/size]
[size 1]STRIPED BASS: Striper fishing is still number one at Castaic. There are a lot of bigger fish pushing 15-0 mixed in with the 2-0 class fish. Other fair bites in the region are happening at Silverwood and Skinner. Pyramid is picking up, but still just fair, with better action on fish to 15-0.[/size]
[size 1]TROUT: Big Bear Lake slowed but Green Valley continues to kick out quality fish to 6-0. Lake Hesperia is kicking out limits. The entire Sierra region is red hot and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking. Urban trout season is also about to begin: Irvine Lake will open on October 23rd with 25,000 pounds of trout to be planted. Tentative opening date for Corona Lake's trout season is Oct. 16 followed by Santa Ana River Lake's opener Oct. 23. [/size]
[size 1]PANFISH: Perris bluegill good in the east end and in the marina areas. Cachuma slowed some, but it is still kicking out crappie and redear in a fair bite. Pyramid is producing a fair to good number of smaller crappie. In San Diego County, Murray, Otay, Henshaw, San Vicente, and Sutherland are all fair on bluegill with a few crappie. Lopez Lake on the Central Coast is good to excellent for bluegill and redear.[/size]
[size 1]LARGEMOUTH BASS: Bass fishing is still slow to fair at most lakes in Southern California. In San Diego, San Vicente continues to kick out a few fish to nearly 6-0, and Silverwood also has fair action on bass to 5-0 with spinnerbaits and crankbaits fished off points the best. Castaic is red hot if you dip some live shad. On the Colorado River, Lake Havasu has been wide open on the largemouth -- the best bite of the season.[/size]
[size 1]CATFISH: Lake Sutherland kicked out some huge cats, including a couple over 20 pounds, and heft stringers of fish. Skinner may be the best bet in the Southland, however, with nice stringers of fish to 4-0 common. Isabella, Skinner, and Hesperia are still giving up lots of pan-sized and trophy fish to 14-0. Santa Ana River Lakes, Corona Lake, and Irvine Lake all are good on planted fish. Corona had a 19-pounder this week.[/size]

[size 1]SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN WATERS[/size]
[size 1]SILVERWOOD: The bite on stripers and catfish slowed, but overall some anglers had fair action. Smaller school sized stripers are still showing by the dam on anchovies. Catfish action was more hit or miss over the week but fish were still showing on mackerel or nightcrawlers. Bruno Spitz, San Bernardino, landed a 9-8 catfish on an anchovy. Largemouth bass have remained fair to good and are giving the most consistent action on the lake. Plastics or crankbaits fished off the points have been best. [size 1]BIG BEAR LAKE: Trout fishing was slow last week due to winds warming the water and chasing away anglers. Trollers using three colors of lead core line while trolling with Needlefish or nightcrawlers dipped in Crave Gravy down the middle of the lake scored some trout. Fisherman working the dam area and its deeper waters had a fair bite over the week. A slip-bobber with a nightcrawler or Crave Nitro covered in garlic Crave Gravy was best. Bass fishing slowed as nighttime temperatures started to dip. A few catfish are showing for anglers fishing mackerel or chicken livers at night. Most catfish are falling for mackerel or a mealworm marshmallow combo. With the start of trout plants, anglers have had fair action with Power Bait, Crave Nitro, or inflated nightcrawlers. Water is stained so a fish attractant is recommended for trout fishing. Trout are stocked every Thursday, while catfish are being stocked every Tuesday and Wednesday. Jeff Chen, Jimmy Ting, and Tim Ting, Long Beach, won the grand prize, a trolling motor, with a 5 1/2-pound carp, one of 67 carp they landed. Henry Jourdin, Lake Elsinore, had the top individual stringer at 41 pounds. Paul Thil, Lake Elsinore, landed 54 carp that weighed 36 1/2 pounds. David Wood, Temecula, who landed 10 cats and four carp for 8 1/2 pounds. Catfish action slowed and was fair at best. However, nightcrawlers or Whiskers Dough baits are still producing some fish. The biggest was a 19-pounder landed by George Sandoval, Hawaiian Gardens, fishing mackerel at the dam. Cahn Tran, Westminster, landed a 13-pound catfish, while Kevin Foltz, La Verne, topped off his five-fish stringer with a 12-pounder. Dustin Collins, Riverside, landed an 11-pounder. Jeff Leonard, Riverside, landed cats weighing 10-4 and 7-0 on anchovies in the east end. Charles and Virginia Christian, Rancho Cucamonga, landed eight catfish that weighed 50-0 topped by a 10-0. They caught their fish deep by the inlet on mackerel. John Lowell, Chino, landed six fish to 6-0 on chicken livers by the inlet. Fishing for stripers has dropped off and is slow to fair for most anglers. Try topwater or swim baits early in the day or cut baits by the dam or inlet after the sun is up. [size 1]SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Trophy cats were planted last week and will go in again this week, with fish over 7 pounds added to the regular plants of 1 1/2 to 4 pounders. This past week there were 20 catfish reported that topped the seven-pound mark. The biggest fish landed was a 16-pounder landed by Mike Tran, Irvine. A 14-pounder was landed by Long Jones, Santa Ana, while Joe Carson, Los Angeles, had a 70.6-pound 15-fish limit that included a 13.7-pounder. A 13-pounder topped a 60.7-pound, 15-fish limit landed by Lawrence Moreno, Los Angeles. Andrew Penrose, Placentia, topped off his 15-fish limit with a 12 1/2-pound cat to bring the total weight to 52 pounds. Melba Smith, Rialto, also caught a 12 1/2-pounder, and Martin Aculco, East Los Angeles, landed a 12 1/4-pound cat. Trout fishing is fair to good in deep water by the dam. Needlefish or nightcrawlers about five colors deep has been producing. Bass fishing is fair along the cliffs and in the coves. [size 1]CASITAS: Trout are still fair to good at the dam. Drifting a nightcrawler in 50 to 60 feet of water has been producing the fish. Shannon Kakuk, Whittier, landed a limit of trout that went 10-0 on nightcrawlers. Ralph Stan, Ventura, landed five trout for 10-0 also on nightcrawlers. [size 1]CASTAIC: Emergency funding to the tune of $700,000-plus from the county and a $1 increase of entrance and boat launch fees will keep Castiac open through the end of the year. This is good news for fisherman with the lake's striper population on the chew. The bite is good to excellent on cut anchovies in 100 feet of water. But as an added bonus, fish have been crashing schools of shad and are hitting topwater plugs and swimbaits thrown on the boils. Many anglers are landing limits of fish in the 2-0 to 4-0 range with many fish in the 8-0 to 10-0 range mixed in. Willie Mays, Pacoima, landed 10 stripers from 5-0 to 12-0 on white jigs. [size 1]1. The Sierra region is red hot with nice rainbows and browns showing from Bishop to Bridgeport. Crowds are gone for the season and it is quite possible to have a lake all to yourself most evenings. For a trophy brown, troll trout-like baits during nasty weather or right before an incoming storm. Grant Lake, South Lake, Bridgeport Reservoir or just about any lake in the area has a chance of kicking out a double-digit brown. For pan-sized and better rainbow trout, orange Power Worms, mini-jigs, or floating baits are almost guarantees throughout the region.[/size]
[size 1]2. The only reason this isn't our first pick is because all the reservations are gone and have been for a month, but Diamond Valley is the place to be this weekend. If you were one of the few who got a reservation look forward to wide-open bass and bluegill bites, and if you are a trout troller, the action should be awesome on fish to 6-0 or bigger in deep water. Remember only four-stroke motors and non-MTBE fuel are allowed on the lake. [/size]
[size 1]3. Three pieces of great news for Castaic Lake anglers. First, the lake will remain open for at least through the end of the year thanks to a bailout by Los Angeles County. Second, the striper bite remains wide open. Third, in addition to the deep-water bite, the stripers are now chasing shad on the surface and swimbaits and topwater lures are also working for these 2-0 to 12-0 class fish.[/size]
[size 1]FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS[/size]
[size 1]STRIPED BASS: Striper fishing is still number one at Castaic. There are a lot of bigger fish pushing 15-0 mixed in with the 2-0 class fish. Other fair bites in the region are happening at Silverwood and Skinner. Pyramid is picking up, but still just fair, with better action on fish to 15-0.[/size]
[size 1]TROUT: Big Bear Lake slowed but Green Valley continues to kick out quality fish to 6-0. Lake Hesperia is kicking out limits. The entire Sierra region is red hot and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking. Urban trout season is also about to begin: Irvine Lake will open on October 23rd with 25,000 pounds of trout to be planted. Tentative opening date for Corona Lake's trout season is Oct. 16 followed by Santa Ana River Lake's opener Oct. 23. [/size]

Pyramid is producing a fair to good number of smaller crappie. In San Diego County, Murray, Otay, Henshaw, San Vicente, and Sutherland are all fair on bluegill with a few crappie. Lopez Lake on the Central Coast is good to excellent for bluegill and redear.[/size]
[size 1]LARGEMOUTH BASS: Bass fishing is still slow to fair at most lakes in Southern California. In San Diego, San Vicente continues to kick out a few fish to nearly 6-0, and Silverwood also has fair action on bass to 5-0 with spinnerbaits and crankbaits fished off points the best. Castaic is red hot if you dip some live shad. On the Colorado River, Lake Havasu has been wide open on the largemouth -- the best bite of the season.[/size]

A 14-pounder was landed by Long Jones, Santa Ana, while Joe Carson, Los Angeles, had a 70.6-pound 15-fish limit that included a 13.7-pounder. A 13-pounder topped a 60.7-pound, 15-fish limit landed by Lawrence Moreno, Los Angeles. Andrew Penrose, Placentia, topped off his 15-fish limit with a 12 1/2-pound cat to bring the total weight to 52 pounds. Fishing at Lake Sabrina was good and one can have the lake almost to yourself. Bishop Creek is fair on mini-jigs, salmon eggs, Crave Amino Eggs, Power Bait, or worms.
