Mosquito Lagoon Redfish/Daytona/NewSmyrna/Orlando
#1
Another fun year of fishing has begun here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida. So far this January 2012 has seen great weather conditions with cool mornings and some fairly warm days, schooling Redfish have been great fun sight fishing targets, casting select size live shrimp to the visible waking and pushing fish on the shallow flats. Most of these Reds are in the slot size up to 27” with a few fish over the slot being caught also. Winter pattern has most all the fish bunched up together which makes for some of the best sight fishing of the year, most shallow water schools can have from 50 to 500 Redfish swimming together which makes for a fantastic fishing experience. Here are a few pics from a couple of recent charter trips including a shot of a Redfish triple with all 3 clients catching a Red at the same time.

We have also been catching a few quality Seatrout which also live on our grass flats on Mosquito Lagoon. Some trips we catch many Trout fishing drop offs and deeper sloughs which concentrate the also schooling Specks this time of year. Best bait for Trout can be live shrimp and Gulp shrimp jigs hopped along the bottom in the right spot.

With the mild winter we are having, my Backcountry mixed bag fishing trips have been lots of fun with schooling Trout and Bluefish being the main targets of late, can be non stop catching with this easy and fun style of fishing. Also at any time in the mix we can catch Black Drum, Sheepshead, Flounder, Redfish, and usually a few other different species of saltwater fish.

Way to go,I've only caught a couple of reds here, but seen some monsters tailing every now and then,Whats a good bait for the really big ones in the 30lb plus range.I don't mean to stump you but can you name this fish, its a little game I like to play,my client caught it off a deep channel.I have caught some myself.but this is from yesterdays trip, biggest I seen.we got a 20" trout,it made everyones day.

Hi Paul, best baits for Bull Redfish: On the flats here I would use a pretty large cut chunk of mullet or ladyfish, in shallow water, large Reds go for more scavaging than chasing, some use a live pinfish, in deeper water like our coastal inlets, the go to bait can be a whole or half blue crab or also again live pinfish.

I do not see a picture of the mystery fish on your reply post ? Please advise, Mike

Captain, sorry about that, I will be happy to share my catch although its not a mystery to me.Captain thanks for sharing that pro tip with me,I'm going to take you up on that pinfish idea.I'm thinking of cutting one in half from nose to tail, and have that rod ready if I see one, also I will cast the other h halfaround. leader, or strait braide? For the fish,I will give you a hint incase you need it."We caught some nice trout that day more as well",let me know if you need another hint, this is an old game we used to play[sly]Here are the trout we caught,we hooked 8,buddy lost two,I hooked two on 4lb test fireline, and landed both, plus fish of the day lol the 20"1/2[inline "mystery catch.jpg"]

Grew up catching the wily bluefish Paul, during the chilly months here in East Central Florida, watching "packs" of them chasing our lures from above at the ocean pier, right now on my backcountry trips we are catching a few dozen on each trip.
I always use a floro or mono leader at the end of braide attached with a double uni,

Thanks Captain, someone thought it was a type of trout, these blue fish, they have white meat?We hooked 9 trout today, lost 4,I got two in the 20 " range.I used same gear for bass, same size 1 worm hook, and finess worm from zoom 4.5" green,I guess they think they are eels,I use a 1///32ounce bullet weight,I hooked 6,in a short time with this rig, using the 6lb suffix braid[fishin]

Blues have darker meat, only good to eat for about 24 hours after icing, do not freeze, will be like cat food[Smile], ok to eat if real fresh
