tried out my first baitcaster this past weekend, and caught some decent bass, so that was fun. I was fine with avoiding backlashes and fine with side arm stuff but boy I sucked big time with overhand casts, I would cast it pretty low and not the nice high long lob I wanted. having a tough time with release and wondering if that has to do with thumb placement, I was even tryin to release it much earlier and I just had the timing way off. any tips would be much appreciated, thanks.

The problem with high overhand casts and baitcasters is the "hang time" the lure gets when it reaches it highest point.
When the lure gets to its highest point is almost stops before it begins to descend, at this point your baitcaster spools momentum keeps going and more line is coming off the spool than the lure is pulling and you get a backlash.
To avoid this with high arc overhand casts when you see the lure about to arc put your thumb on the spool very lightly and slow the spool rotation until your lure is falling again. Then before the lure hits the water use your thumb again to control the speed the line is coming off the spool.
It takes practice but it works.
One of the best ways to get the "thumb" technique mastered is to put on a 1/2 oz bullet weight and practice in your yard on a windy day by casting directly into the wind. Yes you will get a lot of backlashes at first but once you start using your thumb (very lightly) to control the spool speed against the wind resistance it becomes second nature and your high overhand casts will be a piece of cake compared to casting into the wind.
good luck!

I do a overhand and a side cast with my baitcaster. If i am trying to cast it shorter i cast it over hand because my tension is set too high to pitch it effiecently. So for distance i side cast. Buts thats me.

if you keep working on it.
in time you will use your thumb and control it that way.
just sayin.

I've been chastised over this but I'm going to do it again. If you want Cadillac performance-don't buy a Kia. Fishing with a high end bait casting reel will save you many headaches and you will be able to accurately adjust the settings. That said, what kind of reel are you fishing with?

its a diawa exceler, I cranked up the magnets to almost max and then made the tension knob a little looser and no backlash problem at all and good distance. i just have a prob with technique on overhand, I cast it way to low almost into the ground when I first started, I get it a bit higher now but still somethin is wrong, might be my thumb position being in a bad spot and to hard to release it with overhand casts, side arm and pitching i picked up just fine but in tighter cover spots say for pineview, i definitely need to master overhand.
