STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing 1/19/02

On Friday the 18th, B-Fast’s DECISIVE guided Steve Davis and friends from Holbrook,NY on Long Island to the Bank’s shoal-water. Capt. Scott reported finding excellent bait concentrations of sand eels and herring. Cod and pollock were feeding on the bait in 80 to 100 ft on top of the bank. Jigs and rubber or bucktail teaser rigs proved to be the most effective technique. Steve’s group filled the coolers with medium or market cod between 8 and 15 pounds. The cod between 15 and 18 pounds and a couple of pollock over 12 pounds were the best fish of the day.

As I write from my booth at the Sportsmen’s Show in the Nassau Coliseum, the DECISIVE is homeward bound to Green Harbor in Marshfield with Bill Jarmolinski’s group from Bayonne, NJ aboard. Bill’s group found the cod on the shaol-water feeding aggressively on the concentrated sand eels and herring. Mostly medium cod between 8 and 15 pounds came over the rails with numerous pollock mixed in. More of the bigger size cod in the 15-18 pound class were in the catch—10 in all. Once again, a number of pollock over 12 pounds rounded out the day.

B-Fast Charters will be exhibiting next at the Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Expo in Worcester, MA in the Centrum Expo Center, January 31-February 3.

Capt. Mike,
Thanks for the post...are you hearing any rumors about cod being really close inshore? Say around Scussett and the Canal?

Jerry Vovcsko
Moderator: Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island Forums
