Translator in need of help
#1
Hi!

I have to admit I don't know a lot about fishing. I work as a translator and I am currently translating an episode of "STIHL'S REEL IN THE OUTDOORS" WITH JOE THOMAS (i.e. subtitles). I have some questions that perhaps someone here can help clarify.

1/ Two guys are fishing in a private lake and the conversation goes like this: -YOU WAS FIXING TO BIRDDOG ONE, WASN'T YOU? HE'S ON POINT. -I WAS ON POINT. BUT SHE PULLED MY PANTS DOWN THERE. PULLED MY SKIRT DOWN THERE. What do they mean by “birddog” and “pulled my pants down there”. Some time later he says: “I'VE SEEN THEM BICEPS. WITH YOU BIRD-DOGGING LIKE THAT, YOU'RE GOING TO JERK ONE'S LIPS OFF.” Are they referring to when you yank the fish out of the water in a violent manner? Later on in the program, one of them says: “LOOK AT IT. HE PULLED THE SKIRT DOWN.”

2/ What does he mean by “fan-cast” here? “WHEN I GET INTO THESE WINDY POCKETS IT'S PUSHING ME IN. NORMALLY YOU HAVE TO REVERSE THE TROLLING MOTOR AND BLOW IT OUT. DROP THE POWER POLES. LOCK IN. AND THEN ALL WE GOT TO DO IS WE CAN FAN-CAST ALL THIS STUFF, LET THE WIND BLOW US IN A LITTLE BIT FURTHER AND SPIKE IT BACK IN.”

Bird dogging typical refers to tracking or watching something, the others I can infer from how they were used but not real sure.

Pulled my pants down likely means "caught by surprise".??

Welcome to the wonderful world of slang Smile Good luck bud

Thanks for replying!

I have managed to find out that a "skirt" is a part of the actual bait, so I think he's making a play on words here.

And also, can't "bird dig" be a name of a particular bait? Like "jerk bait".

My biggest problems now are "bedfishing" and "fan cast" (something he does with his boat while fishing, I think)

Well I can help on the last two.
Bed fishing- a lot of warm water fish make what is called beds, to lay their eggs in when they spawn. The are aggressive during this time and will hit anything that comes need their beds, including a fisherman's lure.
Fan cast- is when a fisherman stands in one place and cast his lure in different direction. Think of it like one of those folding fans the Japanese ladies use to fan themselves, if you lay it flat and cast in different directions like that fan

#2 refers to a windy situation where they put the power pole down into the bottom and threw their bait/lures into the water every 2ft or so. Like WH2 stated. Thats fanning an area. Also he normally uses his trolling motor to go backwards to keep position, then uses his pole to stay put. Releases his pole to drift some, then resets it.
