Top 3 Places To Live in Idaho for Anglers
#1
Alright, I have an article coming up that's going to rank the top 3 prime locations to live in the state of Idaho if you're an avid angler. Narrowing it down to three might be tough, but that's half the point. And I figured I'd ask this opinionated crowd first.

I know this place is heavily populated by SE ID guys, but try to be as objective as possible (if you want).

Give me what you think are your top 3 towns, and if you care to explain why, that would be great as well.

thanks,

Jeremy

Might as well get it started. Coeur d' Alene, Boise (yup, it is centrally located for the McCall, Hagerman, Strike, Lucky Peak, Arrowrock, Anderson Ranch, and
Brownlee/Hells Canyon areas), and Idaho Falls, or adjoining towns. OK, shoot me down!! Mike

I totally agree with you. I don't know the cour d' alene area but Idaho falls is close to many areas that are world class for trout. Tons of streams and rivers close by with yellowstone and island park only a short drive away. Boise as well, it has about the same fish selection as twin falls but more places to fish overall. One thing I've enjoyed about twin falls is the wide variety of fish that you can catch versus the idaho falls area and Boise seems to be like that but better.

I have no opinion on N. Idaho because I haven't spent enough time there.

Trout
#1: Idaho Falls or Rexburg because it is between the N. Fork and S. Forks of the Snake river arguably two of the highest ranked trout rivers in the west. Plus the Teton is nearby and Island Park/Henrys are only an hour away.

#2: Preston, the diversity of the fishery in that area is incredible. You can fish a ton of small reservoirs for stocked trout or a few within an hour with trophy regulations + there are crappie, walleye, catfish, bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass nearby.

#3: Twin Falls, Not far to many great fisheries. Central southernly located for access to Magic/Sunvalley, Boise area fisheries, or even the American Falls area.

I'm pretty biased myself. I moved to Salmon 2 years ago for the fishing so #1 is Salmon, #2 would be Idaho Falls, and # 3 would be Orofino.

#1 and #3 would be for the Salmon and Steelhead fishing and #2 for the great trout fishing.

I did live in Pocatello for 10 years and loved all of the bass fishing around Soda and Preston, but I like the trout fishing the best. Especially the steelhead. There's no head like steelhead!!!!

1: Here

2: There

3: Hell Anywere!!!

ok seriously

1:Salmon, great diversity of trout, salmon and steelhead.

2: Preston, it has it all small streams, great bass small and large mouth, walleye, panfish, catfish, and numerous lakes to icefish.

3rd Island park area, not much better trout fishing in the world than Henry's lake and Henry's fork.

After you get a good idea of the top three make it into a poll and see if we can sort it out.

I'll preface my vote w/ I figure the town has to be more than a small dot on a map so you still have a selection of resources when you aren't on the water.
1) Idaho Falls: As stated it's central to the N. and S. Forks of the Snake, within easy distance to several popular lakes and the Yellowstone waters. Has excellent trout fisheries and if you look ok bass in spots plus you can ice fish around here the first 3 months of the year.

2)Boise: Again, central for targeting bass/crappie/perch at CJ, not much further and you have Payette lakes and Cascade for trout and jumbo perch. Plus the local rivers aren't too heavily pressured much of the time. Basically you can target just about all Idaho has to offer within 1.5 hrs including sturgeon. The downside is it's getting a bit big for my liking.

3) Lewiston: At the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers = steelhead and salmon. Beyond that you can target smallies in the snake, in town no less. The other direction a little bit and you have Dworshak Res which currently holds the last two state record smallie records, plus the trout and koke fishing there. The big draw back is the smell of the paper plant that is overwhelming on initial arrival.

hard to leave lewiston out of this. The salmon and steelhead fishing. the smallmouth in the snake and dorhshak. all the small surrounding lakes with amazing largmouth, Crappie and bluegill fishing.

hard for me to pick between Idaho Falls and Lewiston though.

#1 lava hot springs. Because with in an hour drive there is the snake, bear, and portneuf rivers. Many small streams and dozens of reservoirs to choose from.

#2 mtn home, because it is centrally located for everything southwestern.

#3 anything in the panhandle region. Because there is a ton of small streams and lakes all over.

Actually, Lewiston was one of the first places that I thought of. But I think if I was a hard core angler who had to choose between Orofino and Lewiston, I'd pick Orofino. Everything Lewiston has to offer is a short drive away, but being in Orofino, I'm a lot closer to Dworshak, and at the gateway to some good trout streams. But in my mind, they're pretty much 2 sides of the same coin.
