A brown trout painted by Mike Zillgitt of Dexter will be featured on the 2013 Minnesota Trout and Salmon Stamp.
Zillgett's painting was chosen as the winning design from among eight entries in the stamp contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). For Zillgett, a life-long artist and trout angler in the streams of the Root River Valley in southeastern Minnesota, this was his first entry in the stamp contest.
Three entries advanced to the final stage of judging. Laurence Huls of Avon finished second. Steven Trofka of Maple Grove placed third.
The five-member panel of judges this year were Mateo Cadiz, DNR creative services director; Earl Peck, co-owner of Peck and Gartner Art Gallery; Andrew Simons, curator of Fishes at the Bell Museum of Natural History; John Lenczewski, state director of Minnesota Trout Unlimited; and Doug Smith, Star Tribune outdoor reporter.
Trout stamp validations are printed in text on a fishing license. This is the only verification needed to prove purchase of the trout stamp. Purchasers may request the actual pictorial stamp for an additional $2.
The DNR offers no prizes for the stamp contest winner, but the winning artist retains the right to reproduce the work. The following species are eligible for the 2014 stamp: brook, rainbow, splake and lake trout, and coho, pink, Chinook and Atlantic salmon. Brown trout designs are not eligible for the 2014 stamp.
