Low Tide at Newton
#1
Can happily report - not a SINGLE ski boat on Newton today. Rejoice - it's an anglers lake again! I've seen it low, but not THIS low.
Ben and Andy got an earlier start - shared some moral support while I tipped the boat off the trailer.

Worked along the dike first, and pretty quick got into some perch. Ah yes - a perch fix! Got to messing along the shoreline, and pulled in some tiny bass, bluegill and even sunfish. Nothing worthwhile - but some perch in the 8-9inch class.

Saw a musky lurking between me and a boat next-door. Pitched a spinner in front of it's nose, and bam - it hit. Quick as it was on, it was off. Little while later couple guys on the bank hooked up a nice leaper. Put on quite a show, then they gave it a quick release.

Moved westward, and hit into some bigger Gills, and some bass with a bit more tug to 'em. The perch continued to pester, so I continued to select and string a few.
Heard a bunch of hoops and hollers as the boyz wrassled a musky.

Trucked uplake a bit, and worked some shorelines, humps, and what little wood structure I could find. It was a perch-fest, and a lot in the 8"+ size. More basslings and then - some crappie. No slabbos, but always fun to fill the bucketlist a lake has to offer. I did have a number of Musky follows - always a thrill. Never did track down any lunker bass, NOR did I hook up any catfish.

Good day on the water, nice to get out. Plenty of heat and sun - no doubt! Plus a few good tugs - rounds out the day.

awesome stringer and story man. Good to hear the power team left you alone. What size of perch do you consider keepable? I've caught many of them but never one that I went "hmm I'm gonna keep you!" I'm starting to think my expectations don't meet the real world.

I'd like to get out soon. Maybe we can meet up sometime and wet a line together! Hope your interested. Catch ya later!

It was definitely a fun morning for us too. That was a good looking stringer of fish you held up for us. We are going to head back out on Wednesday morning for a little while. I will probably end up launching from the west side somewhere then because once that water drops about 3 more feet, it gets twice as steep right there at the ramp.

Makes for a pretty exciting launch/load. But was glad to make it on/off without incident. Pretty steep - glad to have the AWD lock for sure. I suppose it they start work on the "ramp" then there won't BE access from there for a time.

I would LOVE to get into some slabbo 14 inch super fat perch. But that's not been my luck so far. 8" plus tend to have a decent filet on them. Takes a few to put together a meal. But with a limit of 50 - I'm sure I caught over limit, but kept about 20.

I need to get on some cattin' here soon! Or time's gonna run out!

The water levels look low...but I guess that helps out on the condensing the fish! Too bad you could not keep that musky on the hook...they got a way of flippin the fin right at you......makin one hungery for more!

Ya know - I always worry about that. Tend to get a bit squirrely about rinsing a bloody perch off over the side of the boat... (here fishy fishy!)
Not sure I'd hang a stringer off a float tube, or from a waist if wading. When the first ones stopped wiggling - they all went on ice in the cooler.

Thought it was funny last year to have a stringer of tasty real perch hanging off one side, and a perch-pattern jig dead-sticked off the other, and 4x- hooked up a musky of the dead-pole. Didn't repeat that pattern and should have. They were there - I was more focused on hooking one on the run - topwater, diving cranks. Didn't even get through the whole arsenal.

Andy - that was a crappy (found several) but Sadly NOT the ones I was looking for. Thems woulda been a LOT bigger and fatter! [pirate]

Marinespear - I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other an Mantua at least. Plenty of good fall fishing ahead. Need to take another stab at Willard sometime!
Here's what 20 small perch filleted looks like. One of the tastiest in my book.

I've almost always just backed down the "beach" on the SW side of the lake. I find it much easier. In fact, when there are no swimmers, I sometimes just leave my trailer sitting in the water for reload when I'm done.

But I haven't fished UT water now for a couple of months (put another 34 LMB in the boat yesterday afternoon at the same lake as before)...

Once you find them, it's pretty insane action there right now. I'm worried though as the water dropped about 8 feet in a week and a half, and the deepest water I even found was 8 feet deep. I'm really going to be Sad if they drain that place.
