This fishing report is for early September 2nd,2012 for the charter boat “Happy Day Today” fishing out of Fort Lauderdale withAl Brake, his son Ethan, wife and friends.

We left the dock at 7:45am and headed offshore FortLauderdale inlet. The sea conditionswere right for Mahi and Wahoo especially with the debris in the water. There was a strong North current in 400 feetof water, rip currents, flying fish and floating debris. Alwanted to target some edible fish and this certainly was the right day forMahi. We started trolling in 400 feet ofwater and working a bit offshore to 450 feet and back in to 375 feet ofwater. Within the first half hour offishing, we located a half submerged 5 gallon bucket. The first pass we got connected with a doubleheader Mahi. Both fish weighing around 7pounds and in the box, and the next two passes, the same result, doubleheaders. By 9am, we had 6 decent Mahi inthe box and Al’s family was certainly happy.

We continued trolling for another hour and produced another4 Mahi and a Wahoo which were caught just along side a floating board. The Wahoo was on the smaller side, but stillworth keeping. The last hour of thetrip and AL and family happy with the catch asked to target a Sailfish and wewere happy to do so, we headed in a little shallower to 175 feet of water, weset up in front of a couple wrecks which the current would bring us over, andthe hour of kite fishing for Sails and no bites.

We were fortunate to have this nice catch as well as another3 boats in the fleet which also found floating debris catching Mahi with somemixed in Wahoo.

The storm and hurricane Isaac was the ultimate result of theaction. The floating debris was allcoming from the South and heading North up the Gulf Stream. I would anticipate and hope this will lastanother couple days the floating debris and the bite. We like to have a nice catch, but do not wantto hammer the population too hard and with our catch it ended up to be a greatcharter.
