DAVIE, FL Applications for the 2013 Guy Harvey Scholarship Awards, supported by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Florida Sea Grant, are now available to full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Florida universities who are conducting research related to the biology, ecology, habitat or management of fish in Florida's marine environment.
"A key goal of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is to support and bolster marine science research conducted by university students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level," said Dr. Guy Harvey. "We're proud of the research conducted by past recipients and look forward to seeing this year's proposals."
As such, Dr. Harvey and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation encourage eligible students to apply and compete for the awards  which include a $5,000 cash grant to fund their academic work and a certificate designed and signed by Dr. Harvey. This year the GHOF has increased the number of Scholarship Awards from five to seven.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is a leader in international efforts to protect our oceans and marine environments. The GHOF advocates for sustainable fishing practices, funds inspired scientific research and supports innovative educational programs to encourage conservation and best management practices. A principle objective of the GHOF is to help ensure that future generations will enjoy and benefit from a naturally balanced ocean ecosystem where fish and other marine wildlife flourish.
Public policy advancements the GHOF has led or assisted include the establishment of a shark sanctuary in Bahamian federal waters, the addition of five species of sharks to Florida's protected list and the enactment of the U.S. Billfish Conservation Act. In the fall of 2012, the GHOF led a petition drive in support of the National Conservation Law in the Cayman Islands. The GHOF also assisted the launch of the first catch-and-release fishing tournament in Venezuela.
The GHOF funds the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University. The GHRI was created in 1999, and has conducted cutting edge shark forensic/tagging work. GHOF grants to U.S. and international research entities are used to fund important, new scientific discoveries on everything from migratory and reproductive patterns of various pelagic species to breakthroughs in DNA analysis. The GHOF played a leadership role in the recent Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium which has become a premier meeting of scientists and the various stakeholders in the Gulf's fishery, an annual multi-billion-dollar industry for Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Our international partner research organizations include the Bimini Biological Field Station and the Central Caribbean Marine Institute.
In the field of education, the GHOF funds Florida Sea Grant's Guy Harvey Scholarship for university undergraduate and graduate students, the Guy Harvey Sponsored Admission Scholarships for elementary school field trips and the Florida Youth Conservation Camp Network. In 2012, the GHOF has funded a total of 30 marine research and education organizations.
