Hyrum Hunger Games
#1
I love fishing on Sunday in Utah. Great day out, not lots of crowds, some good fish action, enjoyable day with the boyz:

Took the boy and his bud off to the ice over at Hyrum. It was 1 degree as we hit the ice a bit after 8. We cruised up toward the inlet, but away from the regular crowd. Aimed for deeper waters in hope of the perch search.

Popped a couple holes, and wasn't two minutes before I'd iced a couple 13" fat fighting troutses. Still working on setting up the tent, and getting the boyz rigged. Popped a few more holes, setup camp and nestled in.

The trout came, they went, but everyone was getting into fish - heard enough splashing and laughing from the tent to know the boyz were on it - games afoot!

Really didn't move around at all, and think next time - I need to do my searching first - THEN settle in. I know there's perch out there, just not where we were at.
Got me a turn in the tent, and yowsa! I can see!!! Lot clearer what's on the camera screen in the shade! Watched a few trout come thumb their noses at my offerings. Love getting dialed in!

Had a solo trip from a perch who seemed FULLY disinterested - to the point - that my jig done spooked him by dropping down under. Wish I'd have the gumpshion to poke around and find where his buddies were hanging. A perch might wander through solo, but most likely - nearby would be a school full of the student body.

Ice was solid, good 7-8", several sleds out buzzing about. Yeah - it was cold, but the tent was warm. The wind picked up after noon, so we booked out about 1, and hit McDs for something warm and fatty! Had a lot of smaller bows that returned to the depths and a number of fat 13"+ that were selected as volunteer Tributes. The Hunger Games commences, may the odds ever be in your favor!

The boyz done some wandering and came across a Goose frozen on ice. Wonder what you could do with that? Looked pretty fresh, and well frozen.

I tell ya - what kids think is decent ice-gear - we gotta work on that concept! The buddy heater and heat-pockets - good friends indeed! At least gave me the chance to play with the camera in the shade. Love getting the jig dialed in and able to watch it jiggle and dance!

Sounds like a great day I was there also and the fishing was fast for the rainbows. Between my brother and I we also caught around 15 perch so they are still a few in there.

I put together some orders last spring and had some printed up. Check with Wiperhunter - he had a one-sided cheaper one-off option available. Think he still does.

Kinda fun sometimes to put out the welcome wagon, as it were. Plus I'd always know when it was Bamaboy fishing my spot as I approached! [Wink]

Hey Yote sounds like another fun trip for you and the boys. Good job. Don't know where you'll find those perch. I think the trout are so thick in spots that the perch can't get a chance at the bait. I hope these little fish grow fast with the pressure there the 14 inchers won't last too long. It has been fun though. Catch ya later J

I think in his post he meant 7 to 8 inches not feet, little symbol oops... I was there Saturday and figured it was 6 to 7 inches where I was fishing... I think it seemed pretty safe everywhere that I crossed in the east end. I didn't go out by the inlet so I'm sure that will be thinner where the current is cutting it... but there were multiple wheelers and snowmobiles on the ice and I didn't see any go through, so it's probably getting good to go... Later J

On Saturday, there were a few folks fishing in tents fairly close to the inlet. I don't think ice is a worry anymore - at least not on foot anyways.

Ha, keeerect. Duoh! Good thing I wasn't drawing up plans on a napkin for a Stonehenge monument or something!

Saw several snowmobiles bopping and parked. Actually seems to be less open water than I've seen other times at the inlet.

I'm looking for deeper water next time. Gonna search for a while until I plant it. Sure that solo perch had a bunch of buddies near by - coulda been 10 ft away! Time to use the x-pattern approach!

Do you notice when you're ice fishing that one hole will be real hot and your second hole won't? Seems like each time out I have one hole that catches fish and the other is slow. I change poles from hole to hole and the fish still bite in the same hole and my holes are only 6 to 8 feet apart. I'm thinking in the future when I'm not catching fish I need to try that X trick. That's when a power auger starts to sound pretty nice, especially from now on as the ice gets thicker.

I've also noticed the edges are good ice on Hyrum so far, not the case at Newton I've stepped through the ice there a couple times. I always hate that feeling of dropping through and expecting wet feet.

So what ya hearing about the pig? The ice going to be safe this weekend? Trying to decide when to take the family skiing this year. Seems its so dang expensive we only make a trip or two a year, which is probably why I fish more lately. So if the ice is still thin I may ski, and the next week will be early Cisco at Bear Lake plus I have a remodel project I need to get going on so I'm not sure how my weekend will play out but it would be fun to chase the Kokanee. Anyway catch ya later J

I have. And I can't explain it. I'll be in my tent with a friend, and one of the 4 holes will be hot, and the other 3 will be much slower. Weird how that works.

The edges at Newton are always like that - at least in my experience. That is why I always bring at least a short plank. Last year, towards the end, we had a ladder and plywood we used to get out. Plenty of ice, but wasn't good until about 10 feet out or so.

Maybe the camera needs to go down the holes and see what the difference is. It's great if you have the hot hole but frustrating when you don't. Howz the family? Did they all get feeling better? Hope so. Well catch ya next time. J
