Freshwater Fishing Lowdown
#1
PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. Since Lake Skinner reopened last Saturday, striper fishing has been anywhere from merely good to wide-open. Cool overcast mornings mean stripers will be on the surface crashing shad for hours by the dam and inlet. Topwater plugs like Zara Spooks, Pop'Rs, or any shad like bait will get crushed by 2-0 to 8-0 class fish. Also small shad-like swimbaits will get hammered when thrown on to the feeding fish. Later in the day try anchovies or chicken livers down deeper, and don't be surprised if you hook into a nice catfish on one of these baits.

2. Lake Perris continues to show signs of life after a long slow summer. Small bass are being aggressive toward any dropshotted, splitshotted, or Texas- rigged plastic or crawdad in 20-feet of water or less. Plus as of the past few days, many quality bass from 2-0 to 6-8 are showing with more regularity.

3. While most of the ocean bites are really starting to wane, there has been a big influx of bonita into waters from Newport to Long Beach. Since these are mostly two-pounders, the place to be is King Harbor in one of the skiffs available at Rocky Point (310-374-9858). You can fish the bonito with light spinning, baitcasting, or fly tackle and have a great time. This bite frequently is good all winter, too, so it's something to keep in mind when there doesn't seem to be much going on.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

STRIPED BASS: Lake Skinner broke wide-open this week with the cooler weather. Ten fish limits are the rule and stringers are weighing up to 60-0. Fish weigh from 2-0 to 8-0 and are smashing topwater plugs or swimbaits by the dam or inlet. Some mornings have seen extensive surface feeding for hours on end. Find the crashing fish, throw right on top of them, and hold on. Castaic and Pyramid are both fair for stripers with some big fish pushing 20-0 at Castaic. Both of these bites have switched over to the shad on the surface, but both are also still producing some fish on anchovies in deep water. Before the fire closure, Silverwood has small stripers hitting nightcrawlers pretty much all over the lake.

TROUT: The Southern California trout season is in full swing and great fishing can be found throughout the Southland. Irvine Lake will have a

10,000- pound stocking for a Veteran's Day weekend fishing tournament. Fishing at Irvine was already good, and this plant will make it that much better. Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lakes will probably kick out some 10-0 class fish this week and every week through the season, both are getting heavy plants again this week. The Buena Vista Lakes in Bakersfield will kick-off its trout season Saturday on Lake Evans. For a big wild brown or rainbow, the extended season for Mono County ends on Nov. 15. Fires caused delays for the trout openers at many San Diego and San Bernardino County lakes, but most will open this weekend. It would be a smart decision to call ahead and make sure the lake you want to fish will be stocked and open.

PANFISH: Isabella is still kicking out some crappie, but not the volume of fish from recent weeks. Minnows or mini-jigs continue to be number one. Lopez Lake on the Central Coast continues to be good to excellent for bluegill and redear. Perris continues to hold on to a steady bluegill bite, and Kaweah Lake has a good to excellent bluegill bite even though the panfish are on the smaller side.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Lake Success and Kaweah still get the top billing as these lakes pump out numbers of fish. The problem is most fish are small, but some bass to 4-0 are keeping it interesting. Lake Perris is finally coming alive after a long, slow summer. Many anglers are scoring numbers of smaller fish, but local anglers are landing bass to 6-8 on plastics or crawdads. Also look for Diamond Valley to kick out good numbers of fish from 2-0 to 5-0 on assorted reaction baits or dropshotted plastics.

CATFISH: This is the time of year when rains bring plenty of runoff into lakes. This is where big catfish will be staging and gorging themselves. At Lake Casitas, catfish over 20-0 have already been landed as rain and runoff poured into the lake. Isabella continues to kick out smaller fish, although the bite has slowed from last week. Skinner, Hesperia, Irvine, Corona Lake, and Santa Ana River Lakes continue to kick out limits of pan-sized catfish with bigger fish pushing 12-0.

BIG BEAR LAKE: Lake has been reopened to fishing, but crowds have been light. As of Wednesday, the only access to the lake was up Highway 38 out of Redlands or from the high desert on Highway 18. Trout fishing has been good, for anglers trolling lures or drifting bait down the middle of the lake. Shore fishing is fair by the dam on a nightcrawler or Crave Nitro Dough. Fishing a slip float with a five- to 15-foot leader has been the number one method. Other species are slow. For information, call Lin's Tackle Box at

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

DIAMOND VALLEY: The bass bite has remained fair to good. Cooling temperatures have the bass up on the surface for a longer period each morning with a good topwater bite, and then the fish are mostly in 30 to 35 feet of water. Most of the bass are 2-0 to 4-0, but a lake record 12.42-pounder was caught recently. Little fishing pressure for trout, but a few fish to 3-0 for trollers working 8 to 9 colors of leadcore and Needlefish or similar lures at the west dam. Reservations are required to fish here, but slots are available all weekdays and most weekend days now. The toll-free reservations telephone line is 1-800-590-LAKE (5253). Telephone reservations are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. For fishing info, you can call the marina at (909) 926-7201.

PERRIS: Bass fishing is good on smaller fish in waters shallower than 20 feet. The east end, Rockclimber's Cove, the dam, and the rip-rap in the marina and boat launch areas have been best. Four-inch plastics or crawdads have been best, but sizable fish were absent this week. There is still some sporadic trout action with Power Bait or small spinners the best baits. Bluegill continue to be fair, but action is slowing. Small jigs or wax worms continue to score fish. For more information on fishing, call the marina at

CORONA LAKE: Good trout action with many limits of 1-0 to 3-0 class fish reported. This past week's big trout was an 8-0 landed by John Greene, Moreno Valley, to top off a five-fish, 16-pound stringer caught on rainbow Crave Nitro Dough. Juan Ramirez, Lake Elsinore, caught a 7-pound trout to top off his 14-pound stringer. Crave Nitro Dough has been the top bait. The catfish bite has also remained pretty consistent with a 20-pound stringer of fish cats was posted by Brian Frye, Bakersfield. A few crappie have also been showing. Greg Rothwell, Perris, landed a 1 3/4-pounder on a Kastmaster. For more information, call (909) 277-4489 or log on at [#0000ff]www.fishinglakes.com[/#0000ff].

SKINNER: The striped bass bite broke wide open and has remained excellent with the cooler weather. Limits are the norm for anglers fishing topwater plugs or swimbaits by the dam and inlet. Fish have been averaging from 3-0 to 6-0 with bigger fish mixed in. Russ Nievar, Anza, landed 10 stripers for a 60-0 limit, topped by an 8-0. All his fish were landed on topwater plugs. Gary Shelton, Grand Terrace, reported wide-open fishing as he boated 10 stripers that weighed 50-0 on Zara Spooks and swimbaits. His top fish was a 6-8. Many other anglers have reported limits or near limits. Catfish bite slowed down to fair but a few quality fish continue to show on cut baits at the dam and inlet. Trout fishing was fair after a plant on Halloween and the next plant will be on November 14th. Largemouth and panfish slow. For more information, call the marina at (909) 926-1505.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good to excellent trout action thanks to cooler weather and continued heavy trout plants. Most anglers are reporting five-fish limits on trout that average two pounds each, but most stringers are holding at least one rainbow that weighs between 3 1/2 and 7 pounds with some bigger. The trout are biting all around the lakes' complex and the Crave Nitro Dough has been the hot bait, but the biggest fish of the week -- a 10.9-pound rainbow -- was landed by Joey Lark, Fresno, while fishing with a nightcrawler doused with Crave Gravy. The biggest stringer of five trout went to Gus Torrealba, Cerritos. The total weighed was 26 pounds, and the big fish was a seven-pounder. Catfish, which also continue to be planted each week, were good for the few anglers fishing for the whiskerfish, and the quality was excellent. The biggest cat was an 11.4-pounder caught by Mike Mai, Santa Ana, fishing the popular M&M (marshmallow and meal worm) combo doused with Crave Gravy. LOS ANGELES AREA LAKES

CACHUMA: Cold, rainy weather kept most fisherman away and slowed all the bites down. Before the rain catfish were prowling the east end and were hitting on mackerel or nightcrawlers. Trout fishing continues to be fair to good in deep water at the dam as this was the only bite the weather did not affect. Needlefish or nightcrawlers trolled five colors deep have been best. Bass fishing was fair along the cliffs and in the coves before the storm front. For fishing information call the boat dock at (805) 688-4040. The number for the main gate is (805) 688-4658.

CASITAS: Lake received over an inch of rain, and the bass and catfish bite turned on. Bass have been slow this past month, but the rain put fish in the eating mood, as many bass to 7-0 were landed on plastic worms or live shad. Michael Soto, Oxnard, made live bait and landed four fish to 7-8. Catfish also perked up with fresh run off bringing food into the lake. Don Miller, Oxnard, landed catfish weighing 24-6 and 18-7 on mackerel. Trout slowed, but a few are hitting Power Bait or small spinners. Holdover trout to 2-8 are still being landed by the dam in 35 feet of water on nightcrawlers. There will be a DFG trout plant this week. For more information, contact the marina at (805) 649-2043.

CASTAIC: Fair to good striper fishing on topwater plugs and live shad, as a few fish continue to show from deep waters on anchovies. Robert Flaata, Palmdale, landed a 19-8 on a topwater plug. Largemouth action depends on if you have live shad or not. For anglers making live bait, fishing is wide open with limits the norm. Bass are also showing on topwater plugs or crankbaits fished through the schools of shad. There was a 3,500- pound stocking of trout on the Lower Lagoon on October 29th, and many limits have been landed on Power Bait, or small spinners. There will be another DFG trout plant this week. For more information, contact the marina at (661) 775-6232.

PIRU: Fires have kept the lake closed, but lake was scheduled to reopen on Wednesday this week. Anglers should call the marina before fishing. PYRAMID: Striper action has been fair around the dam and Brazos area. A few bigger fish have been boiling in the marina area. BRIDGEPORT AREA: Morning temperatures have been around 5 degrees most mornings, and snow has dusted the area. Bridgeport reservoir is fair on the quality of fish being landed as trout average from 2-0 to 4-0, but numbers of fish just aren't showing. Fishing on the Twin Lakes has been good on stocker-sized rainbows on nightcrawlers. They should be fished under a bobber or inflated on a two-foot leader. On Lower Twin lots of 2-0 class rainbows are being landed on nightcrawlers also. Paul Kosek, Riverside, landed a 4-10 rainbow on a nightcrawler, while Jeff Dodson, Bridgeport, landed a 4-2 also on a worm. Virginia Lakes continue to kick out lots of trout for bait fisherman dunking Power Bait or nightcrawlers, while fly fisherman score on nymphs and Woolly Buggers. The West Walker River continues to kick out trout for fly, bait, and lure fisherman. The East Walker is fair for fly anglers nymphing pocket water or for anglers throwing Panther Martins or Roostertails. For more information, contact Ken's Sporting Goods at (760) 932-7707.

JUNE LAKE LOOP: Cold weather and a couple days of snow have browns and bigger rainbows headed to the creeks, where fisherman are landing fish to 4-0. Anglers are asked to please handle fish carefully and practice catch and release as brown trout are no longer stocked in the region and these spawning fish are the only hope of sustaining the fishery. Fishing at Gull Lake still sounds like the best in the area. It's landing will be the only one open until the end of the season. Bob Hallum, Bakersfield, landed a 6-3 rainbow on a Panther Martin at Gull. Silver Lake Resort and Grant Lake Marina both closed and reports are sketchy. Up at Grant Lake many anglers are trying for big browns staging at creek mouths to begin their spawning. At June Lake, the marina closed on Saturday and few reports from shore anglers. Rush Creek is fair to good on rainbows and browns. For more information, contact Ernie's at (760) 648-7756.

MAMMOTH AREA: Convict Lake continues to be a good late season spot as fish to 4-8 are being kicked out almost daily thanks to heavy Alpers stockings. Jim Thorpe, Laguna Woods, landed trout weighing 4-12 and 2-10 on Power Worms by the outlet. Jeff Burk, Yucaipa, landed a 4-2 rainbow on a Trout Teaser. Power Bait or inflated nightcrawlers are working for bait fisherman, while Thomas Buoyants and mini-jigs are the best lures. Convict Lake will continue to run its fall derby throughout the extended season and will be getting some heavyweight Alpers rainbows each week. Crowley Lake is good to excellent on barbless flies or mini-jigs. The Owens River above Crowley is kicking out some nice-sized rainbows and browns. In the Mammoth Lakes, very cold weather has frozen over Lake Mamie and Twin Lakes, and they will likely stay that way until spring. Most landings and lodges in the area have closed for the season. For more information, contact the Troutfitter at

OCEAN FISHING REPORT

By Terrance Berg, 976-TUNA

For Outdoor News Service

THE BITES

SAN DIEGO BLUEFIN: The 1 1/2 and two-day boats fishing the Cortez Bank 110 to 115 miles off Point Loma are still whacking the big bluefin tuna and albacore. On Monday, skippers Bill and Pat Cavanaugh, running the Pacific Queen and Pacific Dawn, respectively, both got into the bluefin and albacore. The bluefin were all 20 to 40 pounds with the odd fish in the 50 pound range. The albacore, mixed in with the bluefin, were 22 to 35 pounds. The bigger baits have been the key to getting good scores.

LOCAL YELLOWFIN: As colder water pushes down, there are balls of warm water trapped off the local coast and these are filled with yellowfin tuna, skipjack, and yellowtail. The San Diego 1/2 and 3/4-day fleet has been hammering these fish for the past month, and that warm water has shifted north off the Long Beach, Newport, Dana Point region, and all of the local boats from these landings have been getting into the skippies and yellowfin this past week. This bite is not wide open and the fish don't come up every day, but some days are excellent. For example, at mid-day on Wednesday, the Premier reported in with 20 yellowfin. The San Diego boats have shifted to other warm-water pockets of fish to the south and the 43 spot and 302 area. This bite is like the one to the north in its consistency, but if skippers can find porpoises or kelp paddies with bait, the odds of good action goes way, way up.

LIGHT TACKLE BONITO EXCELLENT: There is a big area of bonito making its way up the coast right now, with a lot of two-pounders showing from Newport to Long Beach. Skiff anglers in King Harbor have been hammering the bones, and there's also been a very good bite off the east end of Catalina Island. They're not big, but the bonito are a blast on light tackle and providing some of the best fishing on the coast right now.

HALIBUT STILL SPOTTY: The movement of the halibut back into the deep water bays along the coast has been steady and good tides this weekend around the full moon, weather cooperating, could mark the first decent halibut bite of this late fall season. A few of the big flatfish have been showing in the Marina del Rey region for two weeks and this bite could take off.

Hey there theangler, Looks like you just about covered everything there. Awesome report. Do you want to bring a float tube and join JR, my son, and I this Sunday at Castaic Lagoon??? It should be fun and productive. The docks and the banks should be packed so get there early if you can make it. We will be at the launch ramp for the Lagoon.
