Went up to pine view the morning of the "big ice" rain freeze we had last week, 1-24-2013. arrived at cemetery point about 10:30am after a shady drive over trappers loop. I took the long way up I80 and down I84 past Morgan. worth it after all crap I-15 and the valley had that day.
but I digress, on to the fishing. started fishing at 11:00 after a lazy walk onto the ice. I was one of three or four vehicles at the parking lot. light snow rain mix falling all day, turning to more rain than snow about noonish. walked straight out from the parking onto the south side of the CP lot about 200 yards max. never got a depth, but I would say about 35 to 40 feet. the hole never refroze all day, and I scooped slush four times mostly from what I kicked in and the bit of snow that fell on it.
using a pimple on top and a ice fly on bottom I didnt get much action with my gulp bits, maggots, fish fry, or minnows 2 inch. few bites, but my light perch bite wasnt fine tuned. a fellow not 20 yards from me, saw me eyeing his perch pile, yes pile, with lustful envious eyes and took pity on me. he came over and looked at what I was doing, then he told me he had the same set up with a kastmaster yadda yadda, turns out i was missing the meal worm on the bottom jig. He was nice enough to loan me the rest of one of the containers he brought up. WHAMO! perch a palooza! I used 3 meal worms. then switched over to perch eye after the inaugural use of my handy dandy fish eye remover from sportys ware house. best 3 bucks i have spent in 5 years, i tell ya what. they would not stay off the perch eyes. didnt even have to try perch meat.
I ended up catching 30 in just over an hour before it was time to go home. I kept 25 of them and threw back the dinkyest of dinks that were under 5 inches. was off the water by 2:20pm had to get the kids from classes.
next trip I take will be back to PV for more perch jerkin, with more time to be there and hopefully catch my limit. as it was I only needed about another hour or two give or take.
seems the trick was to tip bottom jig with waxie or meal worm. let em hit it once, jig a tiny bit, let it go dead again then they start to drag it around then you hit em with a hook set. other wise you pull it out of their mouth and they steal your bait.
Good luck,
