Pineview yesterday

Hit the south side of Cemetery Pt. Got on the ice about 0830 & went out mebby 300 yd. Kinda to the south side of the tent city. Fishing not too hot. Between the four of us we caught about 30. Quit a little after 4. I walked all over the place BS'in with others & noboby was doing too hot. There was a bunch of folks that were at least a half bubble outta plumb that cut a great big hole in the ice just a little ways off the shore & they was jumpin' into that icy water & actin' like it was fun?????

Seemed kinda funny but when we were walking out, we were breaking through the crust into about 2" of slush on top of a good 8" of good solid ice. On the way back in at about 4:30, it seemed like the slush had frozen further and I know I didn't break through the crust once. The ice where we went ashore was solid for us too. Unless some fellow BFTer wants to take me out & show me something about catchin' some crappie, I think I'm through with that pond this year.

Let me know if you find someone to teach you because I could use some lessons myself. So far PV hasn't been worth the drive, at least for me, and I admit that it's probably more due to my lack of PV knowledge than the lake itself. I like Flaming Gorge--I know how to fish it so I almost always come home with my limit when I go there.

Dude, I'd teach you everything I know about every lake I fish if you could help me figure out the Gorge on the hard deck. I've been up there 4 of the last five years, a total of 7 trips and haven't pulled one burbot, maker pup, or rainbow through the ice. I basically can't throw any more gas money at it, despite the potential it seems to have for big payoffs in pups for the smoker and baked cod.

But, I don't know much about the crappies, except after ice off, at PV. I've seen them on the sonar, and brought a few dinks up, is all. Too bad.

Good luck.

The biggest key for crappie is location. Water depth is a small part of that location formula. But structure is the biggest part to finding the right location. Once you find the pile of suspended fish you have got 90% of it figured out.

Well, yeah, exactly, but where do you start? In the winter, the whole lake is open to you, and it all looks the same on top. Boulders close to shore are structure. Submerged humps are structure. Old creek channels are structure. Benches on steep slopes like in the Narrows are structure. I mean, which, when? Where?
And why? I'm only good for 15 or so holes per day with a hand auger, and I could drill that many just looking at different depths in the Narrows.

It intimidates, me, to be honest.

I have a few spots that I regularly fish. Even with a GPS I typically will drill 12 - 15 holes before I find that exact sweet spot where the crappie have really piled up. ( GPS even the best ones only get you with 30 - 50 feet, so you will still have to drill baby drill )

My recomendation is to get the fishing map for Pineview. I think Utah Idaho Map Supply carries them. See where the structures you mentioned might be then go start drilling holes.

Buy a nills 6 inch auger, then you will have 30 holes in you for the day instead of 15. [Smile]

The truth is I don't really show too many people my spots for crappie because the sweet spot is only big enough for a few guys at a time. I know there are more on the lake, but finding them IS HARD.

So asking a guy for his favorite crappie fishing hole is like asking to sleep with his wife; and asking for his second favorite spot is like asking to sleep with his mom. In either case the answer is usually no.

I'll teach you how to catch the pup macs and rainbows at FG anytime you want. Once you figure out what they like and how they like it presented to them it's pretty easy to limit out on them. The fishing has been really good this year so I typically get my limit of 8 macs and 4 rainbows by early afternoon.

I'll be taking a big group of my extended family up there on Sat 2/16, so if you want to come along I'll teach you how to get the pup macs. Contact me if you want to set something up.
