Utah Flaming Gorge through the ice
#1
Hey Guys,
Me and my wife are heading that direction next weekend. I have never ice fished it and it has been at least 10 years since I fished the Gorge at all and it was all for bass. I am looking for a place that has good safe ice, a chance for some consistent fishing so the Wifey doesn't get bored but maybe some good chances for some decent sized Lakers.
I haven't caught a laker bigger than a couple pounds and figure I am going to the Gorge, I am going for the big one! (a big pup would be just as good though)

Any tips on a good spot on the Utah side with good ice and what to use would be great. Burbot would be an added bonus too!

Thanks you guys!

Not much ice on Utah side. Maybe Linwood Bay, depending on the day, but be careful on that one.

If you're not at least reasonbly familiar with Flaming Gorge, it aint the place to go to EXPECT to catch fish, especially through the ice (questionable ice on Utah side). It's a great place and one always has a chance at great success there but I would keep Steinaker, Red Fleet, Pelican, and Starvation in mind for a backup plan. They don't have the monster trout but you often catch some nice ones (trout 15-18"; bluegill 8-10" and bass 12-18"). If you're travelling from the Front it's a long way to go to not catch some fish.

Definitely not new to ice fishing, just new to the Gorge. We both love to go and hit Fish Lake quite a bit.
Sounds like we are going to have to hit the Wyoming side. Any tips on where to go up there?

Been a long time but I did pretty good on Sheep Creek Bay. That's on the Utah side.

I was there last weekend for the first time. After talking with the guy at the fly shop he said our best bet was to head to the wyoming side and we did and it payed off! I myself didnt see much ice in the utah side. Stop by the fly shop and talk with him he is great and very helpful. Its only 10 bucks for the pass to fish the whole lake. Not easy fishing by any means but just keep bouncing! IT just might pay off!

Be careful on the ice. We lost some over the past week. Wind and temp. Went Monday had good day. Back Thursday and where I was before was open water.

Hey Cub, Where were you at? Anybody else know about current ice conditions? We have decided to hit Wyoming side cause that sounds like the only fishable side on a hard deck. We will be staying in Green River to make sure we are somewhat near some good ice fishing!

Confluence down to Buckboard should be OK but know that I haven't been on all of that. Be careful. You should be safe. Hope you have a great trip. PM me if you like. I'm no expert but I have been out a bit.
