Porcupine Condition Check?
#1
I'm not sure I can get away this weekend, but if I can, I'm trying to decide where to go. Has anyone been to Porcupine lately? If so how is the vehicle access, can a 4WD pickup get up there okay? Howz the ice and are the Kokes biting? Many people fishing it? How wide is the edge gap? I can't decide between Koke and whitefish at Bear Lake or skiing. Any recommendations?

I believe your dilema is called a First World Problem. [Smile] Where and what should I do with my time off?

Funny thing is I have the same problem this weekend. I would personally go to Bear Lake if I had the time Saturday. Not sure of the Pigs access condidtions.

Hi there neighbor. I was up there a week ago and tons of ice. Road conditions were good to the dam and i drove all the way around to the back with no problem. The biggest problem is the water is down about 40 ft. Places where i caught fish last year had about 5 ft of water. I hiked all over that lake drilling probably 40 holes and never marked a fish. I even went down in front of the dam and drilled all over in all different depths from 80 ft to 10 ft and never marked any kokes on the flasher. I am sure there are kokes in there but i sure couldnt find them with all the technology that i fish with. I fished there last year a couple different times and had no problem finding fish. Catching them was always a different story but i always managed to do better then everyone else i talked with. This year nothing like they just disappeared.

I don't have as much trouble deciding as I do getting away from everything else that needs to be done. But I know February is prime time and if I miss it, conditions deteriorate fast. It's hard having competing wants and then knowing what you should really be doing instead. But if I get furloughed here next month I'll have more time and no money so I guess I'll be doing chores then. Guess that's part of why I'd consider the pig, it's a lot cheaper than the other options. Later J

If you're looking for the kokes the best idea is to get settled in and wait, they are constantly on the move and the chances of drilling on top of them and not having them scatter are pretty slim, sit tight and wait for them to move under you, drilling 40 holes is an awful lot of moving around [Wink]

Hey with that cute new addition to the family I didn't think you'd make it out as much. That doesn't sound like a very good report for up there. Last summer I graphed Kokes from bank to bank and end to end I wonder where they all went? Thanks for saving me a trip. Later J

40 holes was all day. We sat a ton and fished for long periods and still no fish. We fished in similar areas as last year and at similar depths and still couldnt mark any fish. I was a bit frustrated.

Back to the previously mentioned option#2, I was wondering what methods are used for catching white fish at Bear lake? I'm picturing a small lure or jig tipped with a waxie or bait of some sort. And I assume they are on the bottom?? Are they normally out deep or do they like more shallow??

I'd check out Bear Lake Fish Guy's reports. He's got all the skinny on the down low - up high.
Sounds like a kastmaster, or spoon, pimple - tipped with crawler, or waxie can do the trick.

So J- you ever make up your mind? I'd love to try the Pig - just not sure what the new snow will do for travel. Plus that hike up - I'm getting old!

Bear Lake still sounds like it's got some promise. Wouldn't mind trying for some of them cisco if they're still snaggable.

But - I've had an invite over to Hyrum - bud's scout troop is looking for some blade action!

Hey Yote, Guess I'll take my daughter up for our yearly ski with Dad day, if the roads will allow... I'd like to try the pig, but I know the Dawg knows his stuff, if he couldn't find any I'm guessing the action might be pretty slow, unless it was just the wrong day to be there... Anyway this is one of my winter traditions that I want to get in before the money runs out at furlough time... I'd love to hit Bear Lake now as well, it's a blast to lay on the ice and look down the hole and watch the whitefish come take your lures, plus you can pick up a few cisco yet so that would be a blast too, but I guess I can only be one place at a time... I love winter sports, too bad the season always seems so short... Good luck with the scouts, let me know how it was, my boys want to go on an ice fishing outing as well, been wondering about Newton so they can sled while some are fishing.. Got a great group of scouts, some just aren't into fishing, but I'm working on them... Later J

Dont mean to be rude but would love a more detailed report. Were you catching trout or kokes? Without giving up the hotspot can you tell which part of the lake?

Now by entrance do you mean where the creek comes in or the dam where the road comes into the lake? Is it hard to get your gear in and out of the hole? Seems like it could be a tough pull. Thanks for the help and info. Later J

Thanks how is the climb up out of there? Can you take a sled up and down that steep approach? Are the rocks hard to crawl over? I usually put in up further since that looks so steep there. Thank you again for the info. Later J

Lol ya man not a problem man its not like porky pine is a big secret the climb is not to bad I did it with a two man tent fish finder auger two poles and a buck buy my self here is a map of where I was about 200 feet from the rock to the right faceing the rocks all the fish seemed to be stuck in that area I try to cover the hole lake and that's where the most action was hopefully the map dials you in a little bettter and you and the scouts can put a dent in them koks take a tent or a box so you can see where there below you
