Father and son, Brad and Zak Brody, from Iowa decided to dosome father and son bonding, so what better way to accomplish this than to goon a deep sea sport fishing charter in Fort Lauderdale aboard the Happy DayToday along with the Topshotfishing team. We had variable winds at 5-7 mph, blue skies, and temperatures in thehigh 70’s.

We stopped to purchase a dozen Goggle Eyes at T & T Baitin the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. There was little wind but high hopes that thewind would pick up later in the charter so we could fly the kites. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, westarted off trolling at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale with two plainers down, one with a 3 ½ bluereflector drone spoon and the other with a double hook Bonito strip with achartreuse sea witch in front of it. For surface baits we went with twoBallyhoos and two Bonito strips.

I headed to an artificial wreck that’s located south of Fort Lauderdale in 180 ft.of water. With no luck and still no windto fly the kites, I trolled to three other wrecks. We caught a couple of Kingfish over one ofthe wrecks and a couple of Bonitos over the other wreck. Finally, we got very little wind, so we flewan ultra light kite on a 20 lb. test line with two live Goggle Eyes from thekite and one from the rigger and a Shark bait on the bottom. A splash appeared on the long kite bait andwe hooked up with a Mahi Mahi for a short period of time but he threw thehook. After resetting the kite, wecaught a Bonito. As we were sittinghoping for a black shadow to appear, the short bait started acting erratic, which is a tell tale sign that a predator was close by. A Bull Mahi Mahi exited the water as he atethe live Goggle Eye – the fight was on!!! After a nice run, Zak brought the Mahi Mahi to the boat as Jackson, ourmate, gaffed the fish. Brad’s commentwas that the Mahi Mahi would be their dinner for tonight.
