Willard Walleye
#1
Made the first trip to Willard for2013. I didn't leave home till 7:45. It was dark by the time I got to my spot on the west dike. Was using bright curly tails on a sixteenth oz head. Really original stuff.

First fish popped it in about three feet from the bank. The next one hit it about as far out as I could cast. I had two more solid thumps that first hour, but found my hook had broken at the bend some time after I landed the second one. They moved in and were chasing each other a little bit but completely stopped feading. I snagged a nice 5 lb female but the hooked popped out as I was trying to get my hands on her.

The fish were super chuncky. The pic made em look skinny, but they truly were as healthy a Willard walleye as I've seen. There were a few fisherman spread out down the dike and it sounded like everyone was catching a few. It was dead calm. I sure enjoyed watching the moon rise and sitting on my rock just soaking it in.

The water was a sickly unoxygenated green. I think the first good wind will really get the walleye up to the dike. I have been walleye fishing twice this year and have caught them both times. I don't think I've ever been two for two in march before. I've slandered the dwr a little lately, but the walleye fishing is really good in the state right now. Especially if you take Powell into consideration. So thanks dwr.

Very cool. Will you make it 3 for 3 before the month ends? Smile

Nice work. One of these days I have got to try the west dyke. I've fished every one but the west one. Just out of curiosity, are you fishing the bottom or just somewhere int he middle of the water column? I wish Willard wasn't such a drive for me to figure it out a little more on my own.

I'm going back out tonight. Mu usual method this early in the year is to cast and then start reeling emmidiatly, but very very slow. As it gets close to shore it starts dragging. I'm sure there are other better ways but for march that's how I do it. No jigging either. Occasional pauses.

How was the road going out to the South West Corner?
I don't to mess with the Channel so the SW Corner is my next choice.

The road was fine. It has less washboards than some years. Of coarse the mudders got the north side of the road pretty tore up. I've never had much luck at the corner, have you? I like to get away from the crowds though.

I have not caught Walleye there but I'm usually fishing for Wiper on the SW Corner. My jigs are suspended and not on the bottom where most Walleye are found.

I agree that fishing there can get you away from the crowds for a while. When the Wiper action picks up though, that place gets busy.

Wow! That's a great pile of walleye for any month let alone march. I'm jealous. I went tonight and hooked only one that I didn't land. Dangit.

Judging from the picture, it would appear that Budweiser is the secret to a big pile of them. Haha, nice pic.
